The Numbers Behind the Craze
This summer, the demand for cold beverages ordered online saw a significant surge. According to a report from Swiggy analyzing trends between April and June 2026, the overall demand for cold beverages increased by a staggering 20.7% compared to the same
period last year. This wasn't just a minor uptick; it was a clear signal of a larger shift in consumer behaviour, driven by intense heatwaves and the unparalleled convenience of quick commerce. Platforms are no longer just delivering food; they are becoming essential utilities for managing daily life, especially during the punishing summer months when a cold drink is less a luxury and more a necessity. This growth wasn't just limited to drinks, as dessert orders also climbed by 19.2%, showing a broader trend towards ordering cooling treats to beat the heat.
The Surprising New Champion of Cool
While you might expect classic colas or fruit juices to lead the charge, the standout winner this summer was coffee. The demand for coffee and mocha-based cold drinks skyrocketed by an impressive 38.4% year-on-year. This category grew 2.5 times faster than all other cold beverages combined. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru led this caffeinated wave, with orders peaking between 4 PM and 9 PM, suggesting a new evening ritual of winding down with a cold brew or Frappuccino. Another surprise contender was jeera masala soda, which saw an astonishing 900% month-on-month growth on platforms like Instamart earlier in the season, indicating a growing desire for traditional, flavourful alternatives to mainstream fizzy drinks.
Long Live the King: Mango Mania Continues
No Indian summer story is complete without the king of fruits. Mango-flavoured treats, from desserts to ice creams, saw demand grow by 19.3%. The love for this seasonal favourite was most apparent in beverage form, with Swiggy reporting an average of 1,547 Mango Lassis delivered every single day during the summer period. This nostalgia-infused drink remains a powerful anchor of summer consumption. The trend extended beyond lassi, with regional specialities like Pune's Mango Mastani finding new fans in cities such as Nashik, Mysuru, and Mangaluru. It seems that no matter how many new-age beverages enter the market, the appeal of a classic mango drink remains unshakable.
Beyond the Metros: A Thirst for Convenience
The demand for cold drinks and other summer essentials wasn't just an urban phenomenon. The expansion of quick commerce into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities has fundamentally changed how people in smaller towns consume. Reports indicate that emerging cities like Amaravati and Thanjavur led the growth in dessert orders, showcasing how delivery apps are unlocking new markets. While metros like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad still drove the highest volumes for items like coconut ice cream, the fastest growth is often happening elsewhere. This shows that the convenience of getting a cold drink or a tub of ice cream delivered in minutes is a powerful driver across the country, bridging the gap between urban centres and smaller towns.
A Healthier Sip?
Even amidst the indulgence, a clear trend towards healthier choices emerged. Swiggy noted a nearly 30% year-on-year increase in demand for zero-sugar or sugar-free food and beverage options. The demand for items marketed as 'low calorie' grew by a massive 105%, while 'high-protein' foods saw an 84% jump. This reflects a growing consciousness among Indian consumers who are seeking balance. They want to beat the heat and treat themselves, but are also increasingly reading labels and opting for choices that align with their wellness goals. This dual demand for both indulgence and health is reshaping the beverage market, pushing brands to innovate with healthier formulations and more transparent labelling.
