The Aviation Sector's Fuel Squeeze
For the aviation industry, the primary source of pain is the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which is directly derived from crude oil. ATF can account for anywhere between 40% to 60% of an airline's total operating expenses, making it their single
largest cost component. When global crude prices surge, as they have recently amid geopolitical tensions, the cost of flying an aircraft skyrockets. The challenge for Indian carriers is the intense competition in the domestic market, which severely limits their ability to pass these increased costs onto passengers through higher fares without hurting demand. The Fertiliser Sector's Gas Conundrum
The fertiliser industry, particularly the urea manufacturing segment, faces a similar but distinct challenge. Its critical input is not crude oil, but natural gas, which serves as both a feedstock and fuel for production. Natural gas costs can make up 70-80% of the total production cost of urea. India is heavily reliant on imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to meet its demand, exposing manufacturers to volatile global gas prices. Unlike aviation, however, the retail price of urea for farmers is regulated and heavily subsidised by the government. When international LNG prices climb, it's not the farmer who pays more, but the government, which must shell out a larger subsidy to cover the increased cost of production.
A Tale of Two Burdens
While both sectors are hit by energy costs, the ultimate burden falls in different places. In aviation, the financial pressure is borne primarily by the airlines themselves. They must absorb the losses or attempt risky fare hikes that could drive away price-sensitive customers. The government recently rolled out a voluntary price stabilisation scheme, allowing airlines to lock in ATF prices for three years to shield them from volatility, but this comes after a 10% price hike. For fertilisers, the risk is largely transferred from the companies to the sovereign. Soaring natural gas prices translate directly into a ballooning national subsidy bill, which puts immense pressure on the government's budget. Recent reports indicate the fertiliser subsidy could far exceed the budgeted estimates for the fiscal year if high energy prices persist.
