The Hathni Kund Trek
Often called the 'Water Valley Trek', Hathni Kund is arguably Jaipur's most popular monsoon trekking destination. Located about 17 kilometres from the city centre, this trail comes alive during the rainy season when a seasonal waterfall becomes its main
attraction. The trek itself is considered easy to moderate, making it accessible for beginners. The most common route starts from Charan Mandir, an old temple near Nahargarh, and covers a distance of about 1.5 to 2 kilometres. As you walk through the dense foliage of the Aravalli hills, you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of peacocks and other birds, offering a refreshing escape from urban life. The reward at the end is the stunning waterfall cascading into the 'kund' or pond, a sight that makes the journey entirely worthwhile.
Bhuteshwar Nath Mahadev Trek
For those seeking a blend of adventure and spirituality, the Bhuteshwar Nath Mahadev trek is an excellent choice. This trail leads to an ancient Shiva temple nestled deep within the forest near Amer Fort. Considered one of the older trekking routes in the region, it remains relatively peaceful and less crowded. The trek is of easy to moderate difficulty, stretching about 3 to 3.5 kilometres and taking around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. During the monsoon, the path is exceptionally scenic, with the Aravalli hills draped in vibrant greenery. The journey offers not just a good workout but also a serene experience, culminating in a visit to the tranquil, centuries-old temple that holds great faith among locals, especially during the Sawan month.
The Chour Ghati Trail
Situated near the famous Galtaji Temple, the Chour Ghati trek offers a more rugged and adventurous experience. The name translates to 'Thief's Valley', a nod to its history as a secluded passage. This moderate-level trek starts from the Galta Ji main gate and takes about 3 to 4 hours for a round trip. The trail winds through rocky terrain and leads to the ruins of Raghunath Garh Fort at the top. From here, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Galta valley, which transforms into a lush green paradise during the monsoon. While the name is intriguing, some locals prefer to call it Amagarh Trek, respecting its sacred history spanning hundreds of years.
Nahargarh Forest Trails
Beyond the famous paved road to Nahargarh Fort, the surrounding wildlife sanctuary offers a variety of trekking trails suitable for all levels. These paths wind through the dry deciduous forest, offering chances to spot local wildlife and enjoy stunning views of Jaipur city and Man Sagar Lake. One popular route is the trek from Garh Ganesh Temple to Charan Mandir, which combines paved surfaces with rustic forest trails. It's an easy and short trek, making it perfect for a quick morning adventure. During the monsoon months from July to September, these forests are at their greenest, providing a cool and enchanting environment for walkers and nature lovers.
Essential Monsoon Trekking Tips
While the Aravallis are beautiful in the monsoon, safety is paramount. The trails can become slippery and streams can swell quickly. Always wear sturdy trekking shoes with a good grip to prevent falls. Opt for quick-drying clothes and carry a waterproof jacket or poncho. It's advisable to trek in a group and inform someone of your plans. Carry a basic first aid kit, enough water to stay hydrated, and some high-energy snacks. Also, be mindful of leeches and insects, which are common in the wet season; wearing full-sleeved clothing can help. Always check the weather forecast before you head out and avoid trekking during heavy downpours.
