The States in Focus
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has greenlit three major multi-tracking projects that will span across parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. These projects are strategically located to address critical
transportation bottlenecks in regions vital for the country's industrial and mineral economy. The expansion will cover 14 districts across these five states, aiming to improve rail access for an estimated 5.6 million people living in nearly 4,800 villages.
More Than Just Tracks: The Scope of the Expansion
This is not merely about laying new lines; it's a comprehensive capacity augmentation plan. The scheme includes the construction of third and fourth railway lines along some of the country's most congested routes. The specific projects approved are the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda (Bagdehi) fourth line, the Katni-Pendra Road fourth line, and the Bilaspur (Uslapur)-Pendra Road third line. Together, these initiatives will add approximately 656 kilometers to the Indian Railways network, significantly enhancing mobility and operational efficiency. The goal is to streamline train operations, reduce delays, and prepare the network for future demand.
Powering the Industrial Heartland
A primary objective of this expansion is to facilitate the smoother movement of bulk commodities. These railway lines serve as essential arteries for transporting crucial resources like coal, cement, iron, and steel from India's mineral-rich eastern and central belts to industrial centers across the nation. By creating dedicated paths and increasing line capacity, the projects are expected to accommodate an additional 27 million tonnes of freight traffic per year. This boost in freight capacity is critical for lowering logistics costs, which can ultimately make industries more competitive and reduce the prices of power, steel, and cement.
Economic Impact and Timelines
The total estimated cost of these three projects stands at Rs 10,783 crore, with a projected completion timeline set for the 2029-30 period. The investment is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, both during the construction phase and in the long term, by fostering economic activity along the new corridors. This development is part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated planning for multimodal connectivity. Beyond the economic benefits, the expansion is also poised to deliver environmental advantages by promoting a more energy-efficient mode of transport, potentially reducing oil imports and CO2 emissions.

While freight is a major focus, the benefits for passenger travel are also substantial. For millions of people, the improved infrastructure will mean easier and more reliable access to major towns, employment centers, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. The projects will also enhance connectivity to several important religious and tourist destinations in the regions, including the Taratarini Temple and the ancient temple near Jharsuguda, potentially boosting local tourism economies. By alleviating congestion on these high-density routes, the new lines will improve the reliability and speed of both passenger and goods trains, providing a seamless travel experience for all.
