The Global Menu for Sustainability
In recent years, a global consensus has emerged around what constitutes a sustainable diet. Spearheaded by influential frameworks like the EAT-Lancet Commission's 'planetary health diet', the message is generally consistent: eat more fruits, vegetables,
nuts, and legumes, and drastically cut down on red meat. This blueprint aims to provide a universal solution to feeding a growing global population without exhausting the planet's resources. It's a noble goal, presented as a one-size-fits-all prescription for both human and planetary health. These guidelines have been adopted and promoted by health bodies and governments worldwide, shaping public health messages and individual food choices.
A One-Sided Evidence Base
The problem is that the evidence for this universal diet is not universal at all. A significant portion of the nutritional research that underpins these recommendations comes from studies conducted in high-income, Western countries, primarily involving participants of European descent. This creates a huge blind spot. The data is a reflection of a specific lifestyle—one that is often urbanized, affluent, and has a particular set of dietary habits. When frameworks are built almost exclusively on this narrow sliver of human experience, they risk being irrelevant, or even detrimental, to the majority of the world's population who live and eat under vastly different circumstances.
The Indian Context: Lost in Translation
For a country as culturally and gastronomically diverse as India, this oversight is particularly glaring. The EAT-Lancet recommendation to drastically reduce red meat consumption, for instance, has limited relevance in a nation where a large percentage of the population is vegetarian or consumes very little red meat to begin with. The focus should instead be on the diverse staples that form the backbone of Indian diets: pulses, millets, a vast array of regional vegetables, and dairy. Furthermore, affordability is a critical factor. A diet rich in almonds, avocados, and imported berries—often promoted as 'healthy' in the West—is economically inaccessible for a huge portion of the Indian population. Our local and seasonal foods, which are often more affordable and sustainable, are sidelined in a global conversation dominated by Western agricultural and food industry perspectives.
The Risk of Nutritional Colonialism
When we impose a single, global dietary standard, we risk a form of nutritional colonialism. This approach implicitly labels traditional diets that have sustained populations for centuries as 'lesser than' or 'unhealthy' simply because they don't fit a specific, modern, Western model. It ignores the immense value of traditional food knowledge and the biodiversity of local food systems. For example, many traditional Indian diets, while not perfectly aligned with the 'planetary health diet', are incredibly nutritious and have a low environmental impact. Pushing a universal template can lead to the erosion of these cultural food practices, replacing them with a more homogenized, and not necessarily healthier, global diet.
A More Inclusive Path Forward
So, what's the alternative? We need to decolonize nutrition science. This means actively funding and prioritizing research within diverse geographical and cultural contexts. Instead of one global prescription, the World Health Organization and other bodies should promote guiding principles that countries can adapt to their local realities. The goal should be to celebrate and scientifically validate the sustainability of diverse dietary patterns, from the Mediterranean to the traditional diets of India and Africa. It requires acknowledging that a sustainable diet in Punjab, with its wheat and dairy, will look different from one in Kerala, with its rice and coconut, and that both are valid. True sustainability must be culturally acceptable, accessible, and affordable to be effective.
