As winter arrives, the call of the open road gets stronger. Instead of staying in, why not make the journey itself the destination? India's highways transform in winter, offering breathtaking scenery for an unforgettable holiday road trip.
The Himalayan Crown: Shimla to Narkanda
For those dreaming
of a white winter, the drive from Shimla to Narkanda in Himachal Pradesh is a short but magical journey. Covering about 65 kilometres, this stretch of the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH5) becomes a winter wonderland from December to February. The highway winds through dense forests of pine and deodar, their branches heavy with snow. The air is crisp, and the landscape is a serene canvas of white. While heavy snowfall can occasionally cause temporary blockages, especially around Kufri, the route is generally accessible and offers stunning views of the snow-covered Hatu Peak range. This drive is perfect for experiencing the charm of the Himalayas in winter without venturing into extremely remote territory, with cosy cafes and viewpoints dotting the way.
The Desert Trail: Jaipur to Jaisalmer
Winter is the best season to explore the stark beauty of Rajasthan, and the road trip from Jaipur to Jaisalmer is an iconic desert odyssey. Spanning roughly 570 kilometres, this journey takes you from the Pink City deep into the heart of the Thar Desert, culminating in the Golden City of Jaisalmer. The winter sun is mild and pleasant, making the long drive comfortable. The scenery evolves from the bustling cityscape of Jaipur to arid landscapes, with opportunities to stop at historic cities like Jodhpur or the sacred town of Pushkar along the way. The final stretch to Jaisalmer, with straight, empty roads flanked by sand dunes, offers a unique sense of freedom and solitude, making it a truly memorable highway experience.
The Coastal Classic: Mumbai to Goa
A perennial favourite, the Mumbai to Goa road trip is especially delightful in winter. From October to February, the weather is perfect, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies, ideal for cruising down the coast. You can choose between two primary routes: the faster, smoother NH48 via Pune and Kolhapur, or the more scenic coastal highway, NH66. The latter, though longer, rewards travellers with stunning views of the Arabian Sea, verdant paddy fields, and sleepy Konkan villages. This route allows for detours to pristine beaches, ancient forts, and bird sanctuaries. The lush greenery of the Western Ghats, combined with the refreshing sea breeze, makes this journey a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
The Eastern Himalayan Adventure: Guwahati to Tawang
For the truly adventurous, the road from Guwahati in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh offers an unparalleled Himalayan experience. This challenging drive of about 450-500 kilometres is best undertaken over several days to acclimatise to the altitude. The route climbs from the plains through lush valleys, dense forests, and past historic monasteries. While winter brings snow, the opening of the Sela Tunnel has made Tawang accessible for most of the season, bypassing the treacherous Sela Pass. However, travellers should still be prepared for icy conditions and potential delays. The reward is the breathtaking scenery of the Eastern Himalayas, snow-covered landscapes, and the magnificent Tawang Monastery, making it one of India's most epic road trips. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
The Southern Sojourn: Chennai to Puducherry
The drive down the East Coast Road (ECR) from Chennai to Puducherry is one of South India's most iconic coastal journeys. Covering approximately 150 kilometres, this route hugs the Bay of Bengal, offering beautiful sea views, especially during the pleasant winter months from October to February. The drive is relatively short, taking about three to four hours without stops, but its charm lies in the journey itself. Along the way, you can explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mahabalipuram with its ancient rock-cut temples, visit the DakshinaChitra cultural museum, or simply pull over at one of many cafes overlooking the sea. The smooth road, combined with any cool sea breeze and cultural stops, makes it a perfect short holiday itinerary.
