What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of long-distance train designed by Indian Railways for the common person. Unlike the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat, the Amrit Bharat provides non-AC sleeper and unreserved general class coaches, targeting
budget-conscious travellers and migrant workers. The key innovation is the use of 'push-pull' technology, with a locomotive at each end of the train. This allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, reducing travel time, especially on routes with frequent speed restrictions. These trains can operate at speeds up to 130 kmph, offering a significant upgrade over conventional passenger trains.
An Upgraded Passenger Experience
Passenger comfort and modern amenities are central to the Amrit Bharat design. The 22-coach trains feature ergonomically designed seats and berths, cushioned luggage racks, and mobile charging sockets for every passenger. To improve safety and convenience, coaches have sealed gangways for smooth, jerk-free movement between them, CCTV cameras, and an aerosol-based fire suppression system. The toilets are also significantly improved, with modern bio-vacuum systems and sensor-based water taps. A unique feature is the radium illumination flooring strip, which helps passengers navigate the coach at night when the main lights are off.
The Seven New Connections
The Railway Board has approved seven new weekly services that will span the length and breadth of the country, connecting major hubs and regional centers across multiple states. The new routes are: Dhanbad to Coimbatore, Charlapalli to Gorakhpur, Gorakhpur to Bandra (Mumbai), Gorakhpur to Delhi, Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat), Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai), and Subedarganj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai). These routes have been strategically chosen to enhance interstate connectivity, linking cities in Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
A Closer Look at the Routes
The Dhanbad-Coimbatore Express will connect the eastern mining belt with the industrial south, passing through key cities like Gaya, Nagpur, and Salem. The Charlapalli-Gorakhpur service will establish a vital link between Telangana and Uttar Pradesh via Nagpur, Bhopal, and Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur gets two new connections: one to Delhi and another to Mumbai's Bandra Terminus, catering to immense passenger traffic. Prayagraj also gets a boost with new services to Udhna in Gujarat and Mumbai's LTT, running via routes that include Kota and Jabalpur respectively. The Subedarganj-LTT Express will provide another option for travel to Mumbai, passing through Satna and Nashik Road.
What This Means for Travellers
This expansion is a clear move by Indian Railways to modernize its services for the masses. By focusing on the non-AC segment, the Amrit Bharat Express addresses a high-demand area, offering a superior alternative to older, slower trains without a significant price hike. For millions of long-distance travellers, this means faster journeys, more comfortable seating, and a safer, more dignified travel experience. While launch dates for all services are yet to be finalised, the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur service is slated to begin operations in October, signalling that these new trains will soon be a reality for passengers across the country.
