Mercedes-Benz has filed patents for a control system designed to allow a two-axle vehicle to do the unthinkable: drive into a body of water, float, navigate, and climb back out. This isn't just about fording a deep river; the system is explicitly for a “swimming
operation,” enabling the vehicle to remain stable and controlled on the water's surface. The patents, filed with the German patent office by inventor Joerg Kneip for Mercedes-Benz Group AG, outline a sophisticated system that goes far beyond simple waterproofing. It represents a serious engineering exploration into making a luxury SUV genuinely amphibious.
How Would a Floating G-Wagen Work?
The core of the invention involves creating buoyancy. The patent details using removable flotation devices, made of either lightweight foam or inflatable sections, that are fitted into the vehicle's wheel arches. These inserts could be stored where a spare tire normally lives and inflated with a standard tire compressor when needed. An onboard computer control unit would manage the buoyancy, able to inflate or deflate sections independently to keep the vehicle level and stable, compensating for an uneven load or water currents.
