Think of Michelin Keys as the equivalent of Michelin Stars for hotels. Introduced globally in 2024, this rating system honors properties that offer truly exceptional stays. Anonymous inspectors evaluate hotels on five key criteria: excellence in architecture
and design, quality of service, unique character, value for money, and a meaningful connection to their location. The result is a trusted, curated list for travelers seeking more than just a place to sleep. Hotels can earn one, two, or three Keys. A One-Key hotel denotes 'a very special stay', Two Keys signifies an 'exceptional stay', and the prestigious Three Keys are reserved for 'extraordinary stays' that are destinations in themselves.
India's Moment: 47 Hotels Awarded
In its 2026 selection, the Michelin Guide has recognized 47 hotels across India, a significant jump from the 36 awarded in the previous year's list. This expansion highlights the growing diversity and quality of India's hospitality landscape, from majestic palace hotels to secluded wellness retreats and chic urban properties. The 2026 list includes 30 One-Key hotels, 15 Two-Key hotels, and two hotels that achieved the highest honor of Three Keys. This recognition places India firmly on the global map for luxury and experiential travel.

Only two hotels in India achieved the coveted Three-Key rating, an honour reserved for the most remarkable hotel experiences in the world. Both are iconic palace properties. The Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur, seemingly floating on the waters of Lake Pichola, and the Taj Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad, a restored Nizam's residence perched high above the city, retained their top-tier status. Michelin describes these hotels as destinations in their own right, offering guests an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.
Exceptional Stays: Two-Key Highlights
Fifteen Indian hotels were awarded Two Keys for providing an 'exceptional stay'. This list features a compelling mix of luxury and experience. It includes properties like The Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, with its unparalleled views of the Taj Mahal, and The Imperial in New Delhi, a landmark of colonial history and art.
