Dubai Airports is currently rolling out a new generation of advanced security scanners across its terminals. The biggest change for passengers is a simple but significant one: you will no longer need to routinely remove large electronics and liquids from
your hand luggage for screening. This upgrade targets one of the most common hassles of air travel, aiming to create a smoother, quicker, and more convenient journey from check-in to the gate. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths has stated that the goal is to make the intrusive nature of old security checks "a thing of the past."
How the New Technology Works
The new machines are a major leap from traditional X-ray scanners. They use advanced imaging technology, similar to CT scanners found in hospitals, to create detailed 3D images of the contents of your bag. This high-resolution view allows security personnel and AI-powered systems to electronically inspect items without them needing to be physically removed and placed in a separate tray. The system is designed to offer a more thorough inspection while simultaneously speeding up the process for everyone.
A Gradual Rollout Across DXB
This significant upgrade is not happening all at once but is being implemented as part of a continuous programme to replace older equipment across the airport. New scanners are already being installed in various locations, including as part of refurbishment work in Terminal 1 and other concourses. While the rollout is underway, it is a gradual process. This means passengers might still encounter checkpoints where the old rules apply. The official advice is to always follow the specific instructions given by security staff at the checkpoint you are passing through. The ultimate goal, as stated by airport officials, is to replace all the older machines so every traveller has the same seamless experience.

For now, travellers should arrive at the airport prepared for the existing security protocols, but can look forward to an increasingly streamlined process. As more of these new-generation scanners become operational, queues are expected to shorten, and the overall time spent at security will decrease. It is important to note that while laptops and other electronics can stay in your bag, the rule regarding liquids—containers must be 100ml or less—still stands.
