to enter a body of water, remain stable while floating, and navigate back to land. While the patent doesn't explicitly name the G-Class, the brand's legendary off-roader is the natural candidate for such extreme technology, especially as it moves into the electric era with the G 580 with EQ Technology. This isn't just about high-water wading, which the G-Class already excels at; this is about genuinely turning the vehicle into a temporary boat.
How Would a Floating G-Wagen Work?
The system relies on a clever combination of hardware and software. The key components are removable flotation devices, likely made of lightweight foam or inflatable materials, that would be installed inside the wheel arches to provide buoyancy. A computer control unit would manage these, potentially adjusting the buoyancy at each corner to compensate for an uneven load or strong currents, ensuring the vehicle remains stable. For propulsion, the vehicle would use its own wheels as paddles. In an electric model like the G 580, which has four individually controlled motors, the system could precisely vary the torque and speed of each wheel. Automakers patent thousands of ideas to protect their intellectual property, and many never make it to the showroom. There are significant engineering hurdles to overcome to make such a system practical, safe, and reliable enough for customers. The system would need to be easily deployable, with the patent suggesting the inflatable buoyancy aids could be stored where the spare tire normally sits and filled with a standard tire compressor. The transition from land to water and back again, especially on slippery banks, would also require incredibly sophisticated software to manage traction.
