Tools like GitHub Copilot were introduced to accelerate software development by automating repetitive tasks and generating code in seconds. On paper, the efficiency gains are staggering, with some studies showing developers completing tasks up to 55%
faster. The goal was to free up engineers to focus on high-level problem-solving and innovation. However, a growing number of developers and workplace studies are highlighting a troubling paradox: instead of working less, many feel they are working harder and facing a new, intense form of burnout. The time saved on writing code is being consumed elsewhere, creating a cycle of cognitive overload disguised as productivity.
The New Burden of AI Supervision
One of the biggest sources of this new workload is the shift from creator to reviewer. While AI can generate vast quantities of code, it doesn't guarantee quality, security, or accuracy. Developers report spending an enormous amount of time carefully vetting AI-generated code for subtle bugs, security vulnerabilities, and logical flaws. One survey found that 73% of developers have experienced problems with code created by someone who didn't fully understand it, a practice sometimes called "vibecoding". This review process can be more cognitively draining than writing the code from scratch because it requires a different kind of critical oversight. Instead of building, engineers are now acting as full-time quality control for a tireless but imperfect machine, a role that can quickly become a bottleneck for senior engineers.
Pressure Cooker Expectations
The mere existence of powerful AI tools has fundamentally changed management expectations. With the ability to generate code instantly, there comes an implicit pressure to deliver features at a much faster rate. This pressure to accelerate doesn't always account for the hidden work of verification, integration, and debugging. The result is what some are calling a new kind of burnout, sometimes termed "AI brain fry". This is an acute cognitive exhaustion that comes from the intensified pace and the constant context-switching required to manage AI-assisted workflows. Researchers from a Harvard Business Review study noted that the presence of AI tools actually increased employee workload because it empowered them to take on more tasks across a wider scope, intensifying the work day.
From Creative Architect to Code Janitor
Beyond the pressure, there's a qualitative shift in the nature of the work that many find demoralizing. Software development has long been a creative pursuit, a process of designing elegant solutions to complex problems. For some, the rise of AI assistants is transforming that role into one of a "code janitor." Instead of architecting systems, they find themselves cleaning up, correcting, and validating machine-generated output. This shift can diminish the sense of ownership and pride that comes from building something from the ground up. While the AI handles the initial creation, the human is left with the less glamorous, and often more tedious, task of ensuring it all actually works together correctly, which can lead to less fulfillment in their role.
The Fear of Deskilling
A final layer of pressure comes from a professional anxiety about skill atrophy. While some developers find that AI tools help them learn new skills, others worry that over-reliance on code generation will erode their fundamental problem-solving abilities. If the AI is always providing the answer, there's a legitimate concern that developers, especially those early in their careers, won't develop the deep-seated knowledge that comes from struggling with and solving problems on their own. This adds a long-term stressor, as engineers must not only manage their current workload but also actively work to maintain their own core competencies in an AI-driven landscape. A GitLab survey found that while 87% believe AI adoption is key to future-proofing their careers, a nearly equal number feel there are essential human qualities like creativity that AI will never replace.
