The Challenge of Planning a Safari
Anyone who has tried to organise a trip to one of Maharashtra's premier tiger reserves knows the drill. It involves navigating multiple websites for safari permits that sell out in minutes, finding suitable accommodation near the correct entry gate, and
arranging local transport. This fragmented process can be particularly daunting for first-time visitors, families, and those with tight schedules. The system often requires booking safari permits up to 120 days in advance, while simultaneously coordinating train tickets and hotel payments, creating a stressful and uncertain planning experience.
Introducing Vandarshan: A One-Stop Solution
Launched on International Tiger Day, July 29, 2026, Vandarshan is a partnership between IRCTC Tourism and the Maharashtra Forest Department designed to bundle these complex logistics into a single, seamless package. The core promise of Vandarshan is to offer an integrated booking that includes confirmed train travel, accommodation, local transfers, and, most importantly, assured safari permits for some of the state's most sought-after wildlife destinations. This removes the biggest hurdle for most aspiring wildlife tourists: the frantic race to secure a safari spot on the official portal.
Which Parks and Sanctuaries Are Covered?
The Vandarshan initiative currently covers six key protected areas in the Vidarbha region. This includes four of Maharashtra's six tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In addition, the packages also provide access to two important wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar. It is important to note that two tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not part of the current itineraries.
What the Packages Include
The standard Vandarshan tours are structured as four-night, five-day itineraries departing from Mumbai CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. The all-inclusive packages are designed to cover the main components of a safari trip. This typically includes round-trip train tickets, hotel or resort stays, all local road transfers between the station, hotel, and safari gates, and the cost of guided jeep safaris. IRCTC has curated five different itineraries to cater to various interests, such as families, photographers, and first-time safari-goers. Travellers should, however, confirm if meals and other personal expenses are part of their specific package.
How the Booking Process Works
The primary advantage of Vandarshan is simplifying the booking to a single transaction. Instead of visiting multiple portals for the forest department, Indian Railways, and hotels, travellers can book the entire tour through the IRCTC Tourism website. This not only streamlines the process but also provides the peace of mind that comes with a confirmed and fully coordinated itinerary. The packages are built around the Vidarbha Express route, with road transfers connecting travellers from stations like Nagpur, Wardha, and Gondia to the respective parks. For instance, a trip to Tadoba involves a road journey from a nearby railhead, as the train does not stop directly at Chandrapur for this package.
Is a Vandarshan Tour Right for You?
This initiative is particularly beneficial for travellers who value convenience and certainty over customisation. It is ideal for families with children, first-time wildlife enthusiasts who may be overwhelmed by the planning process, and anyone looking for a guaranteed, hassle-free getaway. The real value lies in the assured safari permit, which eliminates the biggest point of failure in self-planned trips. While seasoned wildlife veterans might prefer the flexibility of choosing their own specific lodges and safari gates, Vandarshan provides an accessible and reliable gateway to experiencing the wild heart of Maharashtra.
