A Nationwide Hiring Boom
The festive season in India is synonymous with a surge in consumption, and this year, the country's employment market is reflecting that optimism. Reports indicate a significant uptick in seasonal hiring, with some estimates projecting the creation of
over 2.5 lakh temporary and gig jobs. This represents a steady growth trend over the past few years, with overall festive hiring seeing a 7% year-on-year increase in 2026. This boom is primarily fueled by companies preparing their supply chains for higher order volumes, longer sale periods, and the increasing consumer expectation of rapid fulfilment.
E-Commerce Giants Lead the Charge
The traditional leaders of the festive sales period, major e-commerce platforms, are once again at the forefront of this hiring drive. Flipkart has announced plans to create over 2.5 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities, with a notable focus on last-mile delivery, which will account for about 60% of the new roles. Similarly, Amazon India has created more than 1.6 lakh seasonal work opportunities across its vast operations network. Social commerce platform Meesho expects to enable a staggering one million seasonal job opportunities, encompassing both its seller network and the broader logistics ecosystem.
The Quick Commerce Acceleration
A significant driver of growth this year is the quick commerce sector. As players promise deliveries within minutes, their need for a dense, hyperlocal workforce has exploded. This segment has recorded the fastest growth in festive hiring, with an 18% year-on-year rise. This demand is for roles crucial to the 10-to-30-minute delivery promise, leading to a massive intake of gig workers for last-mile delivery. While some firms are aggressively adding to their gig workforce, others are focused on strengthening their existing network to handle the increased load without compromising on speed and reliability.
What Roles Are in Demand?
The demand is overwhelmingly for operational roles that form the backbone of the digital commerce experience. The most significant share of jobs is in operations and fulfilment, followed by sales and business development, and customer service. Specifically, companies are hiring thousands of warehouse pickers and packers, sortation centre staff, and, most visibly, last-mile delivery executives. Many of these roles are temporary or gig-based, offering flexible employment opportunities. A large portion of this hiring is targeted at early-career professionals with up to six years of experience, who make up the majority of the seasonal workforce.
Growth Beyond the Metros
This hiring wave is not confined to India's metropolitan hubs. A key trend this year is the significant expansion into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Nearly 45% of the workforce demand is expected to originate from these smaller cities, including places like Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, and Coimbatore. This geographic diversification is a direct result of e-commerce platforms expanding their reach and logistics networks into new markets to tap into a wider consumer base. This push into smaller towns not only brings jobs but also signals a deeper penetration of the digital economy across the country.
