The core principles focus on fairness, ensuring AI doesn't perpetuate biases; transparency, so we understand how AI models make decisions; accountability, defining who is responsible when things go wrong; and security, protecting systems from malicious attacks. A Look at the 13 Approved Projects
The 13 projects, approved under the Safe & Trusted AI pillar of the IndiaAI Mission, are spearheaded by top educational institutions across the country. While specifics of all projects are emerging, the focus areas are clear: tackling some of the most pressing challenges in the digital world. A significant portion of the initiatives are aimed at detecting deepfakes and forged content. For instance, 'Saakshya', a joint project by IIT Jodhpur and IIT Madras, is developing a framework for deepfake detection. Other key projects include 'AI Vishleshak' for audio-visual forgery detection and an IIT Kharagpur initiative for a real-time voice deepfake system.
Beyond Deepfakes: Ensuring Fairness and Privacy
The government's initiative goes beyond just fighting misinformation. Other approved projects focus on equally critical areas like mitigating bias in AI algorithms, preserving privacy, and making AI decisions more understandable. For example, NIT Raipur is working on algorithms to reduce bias in healthcare applications, such as in medical imaging, to ensure equitable outcomes. Meanwhile, a collaboration between IIT Delhi, IIIT Delhi, and IIT Dharwad is exploring privacy-preserving AI models using a technique called federated learning. Another project at IIT Jodhpur is developing 'machine unlearning' techniques, which would allow for the removal of sensitive or outdated information from AI models, a crucial step for data privacy.
The IndiaAI Mission's Broader Vision
These 13 projects are a core component of the much larger IndiaAI Mission. Approved in March 2024 with an outlay of ₹10,371 crore, the mission aims to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem in India. It operates on seven pillars, including building computing infrastructure, developing foundational AI models, fostering startups, and skilling the workforce. The 'Safe & Trusted AI' pillar, under which these projects fall, is designed to create the necessary guardrails for this rapid technological expansion. By funding research into responsible AI, the government is not just solving immediate problems but also helping to define what trustworthy AI looks like in the Indian context.
