An Equation for Finding 'The One'
One of the most daunting questions in dating is knowing when to stop looking and commit. Mathematics offers a surprisingly elegant solution through a concept called 'optimal stopping theory'. Popularised by mathematician Hannah Fry, it’s often called the '37%
Rule'. The theory suggests that if you want the best chance of finding your ideal partner out of a series of potential suitors, you should reject the first 37% you date. This initial phase isn't a waste; it's about calibrating your expectations and establishing a benchmark for what constitutes a great partner. After that 37% window, the rule says to choose the very next person who comes along who is better than anyone you dated in that first group. While it doesn't guarantee a perfect outcome, this strategy mathematically maximises your odds of picking the best possible partner from the pool.
The Calculus of a Lasting Marriage
Beyond finding a partner, maths can also shed light on what makes a relationship last. For decades, psychologist John Gottman has studied married couples, collecting data on everything from their heart rates to their facial expressions during conversations. Teaming up with mathematician James Murray, Gottman discovered that the trajectory of a marriage could be predicted with startling accuracy. Their models showed that the single greatest predictor of divorce wasn't how often a couple argued, but how they interacted. Stable, happy relationships consistently maintained a 'magic ratio' of five positive interactions for every one negative interaction. When that ratio dips, the relationship enters a danger zone. The model was so effective it could predict divorce with up to 94% accuracy, suggesting that small, consistent positive moments are the bedrock of a resilient partnership.
Understanding the 'Negativity Threshold'
Gottman and Murray's research also highlighted the importance of a 'low negativity threshold'. This doesn't mean avoiding conflict altogether. In fact, the most successful couples are the ones who allow each other to complain and address small issues before they fester. In healthy partnerships, a partner's bad mood might be attributed to an external factor, like a stressful day at work. In relationships spiraling toward negativity, however, the same grumpiness is seen as an inherent, negative trait of the person. According to the mathematical models, couples who address grievances quickly and work to repair them prevent minor issues from being blown out of proportion. This constant state of repair, rather than conflict avoidance, is what keeps the relationship in a stable, positive state.
The New Science of Relationship Resilience
More recent research, including work by Professor Laurent Pujo-Menjouet, treats romantic feelings as a 'dynamical system'. This approach models how feelings evolve in response to pressures like stress, arguments, and other life events. This research identifies a 'critical threshold' of relationship strength. If a couple’s mutual connection and positive feelings dip below this threshold and stay there, the mathematical trajectory points toward separation. The key factors determining this resilience are mutual attraction, how feelings naturally change over time, and how each partner reacts to the other's emotions. The goal of this modeling isn't to say a breakup is inevitable, but to identify these 'danger zones' early, giving couples a chance to recognise the problem and take corrective action.
