What is Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Communication?
At its core, Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication is a technology that allows cars to wirelessly exchange information with each other in real-time. Think of it as a constant, automated conversation between nearby vehicles, sharing critical data like
speed, position, direction, and acceleration. Unlike camera and radar-based systems, such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which are limited by a direct line of sight, V2V can 'see' around corners and through traffic. This enables a car to receive a warning about a vehicle braking suddenly several cars ahead, even if it's completely obscured from the driver's view.
Sudden Braking Alerts: A Lifesaver for Indian Roads
Among the many applications of V2V, the sudden-braking alert is particularly significant for India's chaotic and often unpredictable traffic conditions. The system works by having a vehicle that brakes hard automatically transmit an emergency brake alert to all surrounding vehicles. This gives trailing drivers precious extra seconds to react, potentially preventing a chain-reaction collision—a common occurrence on congested highways. Other critical alerts enabled by this technology include forward-collision warnings, notifications for wrong-way drivers, and alerts about approaching emergency vehicles.
India's Mandatory Push: The New Draft Rules
The latest development is a draft notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) proposing to make V2V communication systems mandatory. The plan outlines a phased implementation. Starting from October 1, 2027, any vehicle fitted with a V2V system must comply with a new technical standard, AIS-230. Then, from October 1, 2028, it will become compulsory for all newly manufactured vehicles across categories L (two- and three-wheelers), M (passenger cars and buses), and N (commercial goods vehicles) to be equipped with these systems. The proposal is currently open for public comment before final rules are issued.
The Technology Driving the Change
The technical foundation for this push is a standard called AIS-230, which is built around Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology. This approach uses cellular signals to enable communication. The path for this was cleared earlier in 2026 when the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) exempted the required 5.875-5.925 GHz frequency band from licensing, making it available for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications. This decision was a crucial step, providing the necessary regulatory backbone for manufacturers to build and deploy the technology on a mass scale.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
While the proposal is a major leap forward for road safety, significant hurdles remain. The primary challenge is creating a ubiquitous network. For V2V to be effective, a critical mass of vehicles on the road must have the technology installed. The phased rollout, starting in 2028 with new vehicles, means it will take many years to achieve widespread coverage. Furthermore, ensuring seamless and secure interoperability between vehicles from different manufacturers is a complex technical and regulatory task. The government's phased approach aims to give manufacturers and component suppliers enough time to prepare for these new requirements. Beyond the vehicles themselves, a broader ecosystem of Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication will eventually be needed, where cars also talk to traffic lights and roadside sensors.
