The End of the Overnight Queue
For years, securing a Tatkal ticket at a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter meant arriving hours in advance, often leading to arguments, queue-jumping, and a stressful waiting game. The new system, rolled out from August 1, 2026, aims to eliminate
this chaos. Instead of one long, unmanaged queue, the process is now structured around a first-come, first-served token distribution. The primary goals are to streamline booking, manage crowds effectively, and improve transparency at the counters. This change specifically targets offline bookings at counters and does not affect the online booking process via the IRCTC website or app.
How the New Token System Works
The process is designed to be straightforward. Passengers arrive at the station and collect a numbered token during a specific window before the official Tatkal booking hours begin. You no longer need to visit the counter twice—once for a token and again to book. The entire process is now completed in a single visit. For AC class tickets, tokens are distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC classes, including Sleeper, the window is from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The actual booking start times remain the same: 10:00 AM for AC and 11:00 AM for non-AC. Once you have your token, you can wait for your number to be called before approaching the counter.
Token Limits and Priority Categories
To manage demand, counters will initially issue a limited number of tokens. The plan starts with 10 tokens for AC classes and 15 for non-AC classes per counter. These numbers may be adjusted based on the demand at individual stations. The system also introduces two priority categories. Category A is for passengers booking tickets for themselves or their immediate family members, and these are given first priority. To get a Category A token, you must show your valid photo ID along with that of the family member. Category B is for all other passengers and agents. After all token-holders have been served, any remaining Tatkal tickets will be sold to walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.
What You Need to Do
To ensure a smooth process, preparation is key. Arrive at the PRS counter within the designated token distribution window for your travel class. You must carry a valid, government-issued photo ID, such as an Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, or PAN card. Since tokens are non-transferable, the ticket will only be issued to the person whose name is on the token. It is also wise to have your journey details and a completed reservation form ready while you wait for your number to be called. This preparation can save valuable time at the counter and prevent last-minute hassles, ensuring you can complete your booking quickly once your turn comes.
