What Is Reddit’s New ‘Play Mode’?
Reddit has begun a limited test of a feature that converts text-based posts and their comment threads into short, AI-narrated videos. When a user encounters an eligible post, they will see a toggle to switch from the standard 'Read' view to a new 'Play'
mode. Activating this mode launches a video, often in a vertical, mobile-friendly format, where AI-generated voices read the original post and a selection of the top comments aloud. To ensure transparency, each of these clips is labeled with the disclosure, "Real conversation voiced by AI." The original text post and all its comments remain completely unchanged and accessible, meaning the feature acts as an alternative consumption method rather than a replacement.
How Does It Actually Work?
The experience is designed to be seamless. In 'Play' mode, the text of the post or comment being read is highlighted on screen, similar to karaoke-style lyrics, keeping the viewer visually engaged. This test started rolling out on August 17, 2026, for web users, with the iOS and Android app rollout following a day later. Currently, the experiment is confined to a select number of English-language communities. Reddit has used an eight-year-old thread from the r/boardgames subreddit as a public example, which was converted into a three-minute video narrating game recommendations. This shows the feature can be applied retroactively to Reddit's vast archive of content, turning static discussions into dynamic, listenable experiences.
The Strategy Behind the Feature
This experiment didn't come out of nowhere. For years, third-party creators have been building massive audiences on platforms like TikTok and YouTube by scraping Reddit threads and turning them into simple videos. These 'Reddit story' channels, which often pair an AI voiceover with unrelated video game footage, generate millions of views and significant revenue that Reddit itself never sees. During a recent earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman directly addressed this trend, noting that a "listened-to or spoken-Reddit can be really engaging." By creating its own in-house version, Reddit is attempting to reclaim this engagement and keep users on its own platform. It’s a strategic move to capture a share of the passive-listening market, potentially boosting time-on-site metrics and attracting new users who prefer audio or video content.
A Broader Push into Video and AI
The 'Play Mode' test is part of a larger strategic pivot for the company. In June, Reddit introduced video comments, which the company says already account for more than 10% of all video posts on the platform. The use of AI narration also aligns with the company's increased integration of artificial intelligence, including expanded AI-powered moderation tools for communities. A company spokesperson framed the experiment as an effort to understand if users find these new formats useful and how they can be delivered in a way that feels "authentic to Reddit." The company has also suggested accessibility as a potential benefit, allowing users to listen to threads while exercising, running errands, or performing other tasks where reading isn't feasible.
What Happens Next?
For now, 'Play Mode' remains a "limited experiment." Its future will depend entirely on how users respond and the data Reddit collects during the test phase. The company will be looking to see if the feature increases user engagement, brings in new audiences, and, crucially, whether it adds value without alienating its core base of text-loving traditionalists. Reddit has historically been cautious about major changes to its core experience, but this test signals a clear willingness to adapt to the modern media landscape. The success or failure of this AI-driven video feature could offer a major clue as to the future direction of one of the internet's most enduring communities.
