What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
First introduced in late 2023, the Amrit Bharat Express is Indian Railways' answer to the growing demand for a better travel experience in the non-air-conditioned segment. These trains are specifically designed for long-distance journeys, typically covering
routes over 800 kilometres. The core idea is to offer a superior, faster, and more comfortable journey for passengers in sleeper and general unreserved coaches, catering primarily to migrant workers and those from lower and middle-income groups seeking affordable travel options. Unlike premium services, the Amrit Bharat focuses on elevating the essentials, providing a significant upgrade over conventional mail and express trains without a hefty price tag.
A Leap in Passenger Comfort
The Amrit Bharat trains are a world away from the old, jerky rides many associate with non-AC travel. Passengers can expect a host of modern amenities aimed at making long journeys more pleasant. The coaches feature cushioned berths, which are a significant improvement. Each passenger gets access to a dedicated mobile charging socket, and the coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras for enhanced security. Other upgrades include modern bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based water taps, a public information system similar to those in metro trains, and fully sealed gangways between coaches. These sealed corridors reduce noise, improve safety, and allow for easy movement between coaches.
The Seven New Lifelines
The Railway Board's approval covers seven crucial new routes that will connect major hubs across northern, southern, central, and western India. These weekly services will significantly bolster interstate connectivity. The new routes are: 1. Dhanbad to Coimbatore: A major link connecting Jharkhand's coal belt with the industrial hub of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. 2. Charlapalli (Hyderabad) to Gorakhpur: This route will connect Telangana with Eastern Uttar Pradesh, a key corridor for migrant labour. 3. Gorakhpur to Bandra (Mumbai): Providing another vital link for passengers travelling between Uttar Pradesh and the financial capital. 4. Gorakhpur to Delhi: Enhancing connectivity between Eastern UP and the national capital. 5. Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): A direct service connecting the holy city of Prayagraj with Mumbai. 6. Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat): This train will connect Prayagraj with the commercial centre of Surat in Gujarat. 7. Subedarganj (Prayagraj) to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): Another service from the Prayagraj region to Mumbai, catering to high passenger traffic.
The Technology Behind the Speed
One of the standout features of the Amrit Bharat Express is its use of 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the rear. This configuration allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, reducing travel time significantly. It also eliminates the need for time-consuming locomotive reversals at terminal stations. For passengers, this means a smoother, jerk-free ride, as the semi-permanent couplers between coaches prevent the sudden shocks often experienced during starting and stopping. These trains are designed to operate at a maximum speed of 130 km/h, making them a superfast option for the common traveller.
When Do They Start?
While the Railway Board has given its final approval, the official launch dates for most of these seven services are expected to be announced shortly. However, some timelines are already emerging. For instance, the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur Amrit Bharat Express is reportedly scheduled to begin its commercial run in October 2026. Passengers on these new routes can look forward to seeing these saffron and grey liveried trains on the tracks in the coming months. The introduction of these services is a phased process, and Indian Railways is working on rolling them out as quickly as possible to meet the high demand on these busy long-distance corridors.
