What is the New Feature?
Reddit has begun a limited test that transforms select text threads into short, narrated videos. When a user encounters an eligible post, they can toggle from the traditional “Read” view to a new “Play” mode. This launches a video where AI-generated voices
read the original post and a selection of the most popular comments in sequence. As the audio plays, the corresponding text is highlighted on screen, similar to subtitles. The experience is clearly marked with a disclaimer: “Real conversation voiced by AI,” making it clear that while the words are human, the voice is not. The experiment began rolling out on August 17, 2026, for web users, with iOS and Android apps following. For now, the test is limited to certain English-language communities, and Reddit is manually selecting the posts to be converted.
Why is Reddit Doing This?
The move is a direct response to a booming trend on other platforms. For years, creators on TikTok and YouTube have found massive success by scraping interesting Reddit threads and turning them into simple videos with AI-generated narration, often laid over unrelated gameplay footage. These “Reddit story” channels attract millions of views, and Reddit has so far been left out of the engagement and revenue. In a July 2026 earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this phenomenon, stating, “There's an emerging content type elsewhere on the internet of, basically, podcasts where people read Reddit content.” By bringing this feature in-house, Reddit hopes to recapture that audience and offer users a new way to consume content during activities like exercising, commuting, or doing chores when reading isn't practical.
A Push for Accessibility and Engagement
Beyond competing with TikTok narrators, the AI voice feature is being framed as a move toward greater accessibility. Text-to-speech tools are vital for users with visual impairments or reading disabilities like dyslexia. While operating systems have long had built-in screen readers, integrating a native, polished audio experience directly into the platform can make content significantly more accessible. The feature also serves to increase overall user engagement. By turning text into a passive, listenable format, Reddit can keep users on the platform during moments they would otherwise be unable to read. This aligns with the company’s broader push into video, which has already seen success with the introduction of video comments.
The Community Reaction and Potential Pitfalls
While the experiment is in its early stages, the concept of AI narration has received mixed reactions in online communities. Some users praise the technology as a great tool for accessibility and convenience. However, many express fatigue with the robotic, often emotionally flat delivery of some AI voices, noting that the same few popular voices appear across countless channels, making the content feel generic and less authentic. A significant challenge for Reddit will be perfecting the execution. AI narration can struggle with tone, sarcasm, and the correct pronunciation of usernames, slang, or community-specific jargon. This could lead to awkward or inaccurate readings that undermine the original context of the conversation. It also raises questions about user control, as it's not yet clear whether users can opt their posts out of being narrated by an AI.
