An Orbit Unlike Others
Most Earth observation satellites, like those in the Cartosat or RISAT series, operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), circling the planet from a few hundred kilometres up. They capture incredibly detailed images but are constantly on the move, meaning they
can only see a specific location for a few minutes at a time before having to circle the globe to get another look. EOS-05 is different. It operates in a geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometres away. At this altitude, its orbital period matches Earth's rotation. This allows it to stay locked over the Indian subcontinent, watching the same broad area continuously. Think of it as the difference between a high-speed drone flying past and a dedicated security camera fixed on your property.
The Power of a Persistent Gaze
This ability for near-real-time monitoring is a game-changer. While LEO satellites provide high-resolution snapshots, EOS-05 offers persistent surveillance. This is crucial for tracking rapidly evolving events.
