A Surprising Discovery
A new study has provided some of the clearest evidence yet on the health benefits of moving away from gas cooking. Researchers from the MetroHealth System and Case Western Reserve University in the US provided electric induction stoves to 85 households
where at least one person had poorly controlled asthma. The results were striking: after switching, participants' asthma symptoms improved from moderate to mild. The improvements were described by researchers as being similar to or even greater than those seen in clinical trials for common asthma medications. The study also recorded a 70% drop in emergency room visits and hospitalisations for asthma, and an 80% decrease in missed days of school or work.
The Pollutant Hiding in Plain Sight
The primary culprit is a gas called nitrogen dioxide (NO2). This pollutant is created when natural gas is burned at high temperatures, and it's a known irritant to the human respiratory system. While we often associate NO2 with outdoor air pollution from traffic, gas stoves bring the source directly into our homes. Homes with gas stoves can have nitrogen dioxide levels significantly higher than outdoor air quality guidelines. In the study, replacing gas stoves with electric ones led to a 70% decrease in indoor NO2 levels. This reduction in daily exposure is believed to be the main reason for the significant health improvements observed in the asthma patients.
A Broader Global Conversation
This study adds to a growing body of evidence that has raised alarms about gas stoves for years. Previous research has already linked gas stove use to an increased risk of childhood asthma. One analysis concluded that nearly 13% of current childhood asthma cases in the US could be attributed to gas stove use. Beyond NO2, gas stoves can also release other harmful substances like carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and benzene, which is a known carcinogen. This is not just a health issue but an equity one, as smaller homes and apartments, which are common in many Indian cities, can experience a faster and more concentrated buildup of these indoor pollutants.
What Can You Do in Your Kitchen?
Replacing a gas stove with an electric or induction model is the most effective solution, as the study demonstrates. In fact, 98% of the study participants reported being satisfied with their new induction stoves. However, this may not be a feasible or affordable option for everyone immediately. Fortunately, there are other practical steps you can take to significantly reduce your exposure to these pollutants. The simplest and most important action is to improve ventilation. Always use your exhaust hood or chimney when you cook, ensuring it vents to the outside rather than just recirculating the air. If you don't have one, opening windows and doors, preferably on opposite sides of the kitchen to create a cross-breeze, can help clear the air.
Simple Habits for Cleaner Air
Your cooking habits can also make a difference. Consider using other electric appliances like microwave ovens, electric kettles, or air fryers when possible to reduce the time your gas stove is running. Cooking on the back burners is also a helpful trick, as most exhaust hoods are more effective at capturing fumes from the rear of the stovetop. While the new study highlights a powerful intervention, lead author Dr. Ashwini Sehgal notes that switching stoves is not a cure for asthma and should be part of a broader strategy that includes working with your doctor and managing other known triggers. The key is to be aware of the potential risks and take proactive, practical steps toward a healthier home environment.
