A Journey Transformed
Direct, non-stop air connectivity between India and Mongolia is now a reality, with the first flights connecting New Delhi and Ulaanbaatar. Operated by Mongolia's Hunnu Air, the weekly service has slashed the travel time between the two capitals to approximately
five hours. This is a significant upgrade from previous journeys, which involved lengthy layovers in cities like Beijing or Incheon and could take anywhere from 13 to 18 hours to complete. The inaugural flight from Ulaanbaatar touched down at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on a Monday morning, marking a new chapter in bilateral travel. This regular Monday service promises to fundamentally change how people and goods move between the two nations.
More Than Miles: A Strategic Leap
This new air link is the fulfillment of a promise made during Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh's state visit to India in October 2025, where the plan was announced alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For Mongolia, a landlocked country, the flight is a tangible outcome of its 'Third Neighbour' policy—a diplomatic strategy to build strong relationships beyond its immediate neighbours, Russia and China. India, as a major democratic power and 'spiritual neighbour' through shared Buddhist heritage, is a natural and crucial 'Third Neighbour'. For India, this enhanced connectivity aligns perfectly with its 'Act East' policy, which aims to foster deeper economic and strategic relations with nations in East and Southeast Asia. The Embassy of India in Ulaanbaatar has stated that the route will further strengthen the multifaceted strategic partnership between the two countries.
Unlocking Economic and Cultural Doors
The most immediate impact will be on tourism and people-to-people connections. For years, Mongolian tourists, particularly those interested in spiritual journeys to India's Buddhist heritage sites, faced prohibitive travel times. This direct flight makes pilgrimage and leisure travel far more accessible. Likewise, Indian travellers now have a much easier path to explore Mongolia's stunning landscapes, unique history, and growing winter tourism scene. Beyond tourism, the route is expected to boost medical travel and create new business opportunities. Officials anticipate that the faster and potentially cheaper movement of cargo will give a much-needed push to bilateral trade, which has been modest despite the strong diplomatic relationship. The convenient link is also a boon for students and professionals travelling between the two nations.
Building on a Historic Friendship
India and Mongolia's relationship is built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared democratic values. India was one of the first countries outside the then-Soviet bloc to establish diplomatic relations with Mongolia, and the bond was elevated to a 'Strategic Partnership' in 2015. This new flight is the latest in a series of collaborative efforts, which includes India's assistance in building Mongolia's first oil refinery with a significant line of credit. The new air route, complemented by existing visa-free travel arrangements for nationals of both countries, is more than just infrastructure; it's a vital artery designed to bring the two 'spiritual neighbours' and strategic partners closer than ever before.
