More Than Just a Number
The Financial Times (FT) ranking is widely considered a global benchmark for business education. Unlike domestic lists, it pits institutions against the world's best, using a rigorous set of 19 criteria. These include everything from graduate salaries
and career progression to international exposure and the school's commitment to sustainability. A significant portion, 56%, is based on surveys of alumni three years after graduation, making it a reliable indicator of long-term value and career impact. When a school like IIM Bangalore consistently climbs this list, it's not just an academic victory; it's a validation of its curriculum, faculty, and, most importantly, the success of its graduates on a global stage.
IIMB's Impressive Climb
This year, IIM Bangalore's Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) secured the 21st spot worldwide, a significant jump from 28th in 2025 and 41st in 2024. This upward trend makes it the only Indian B-school in the global top 25. The improvement was driven by strong performance in key areas. The institute's 'Careers Service' rank rose to 8th globally, and its 'Career Progress' rank saw a sharp improvement, climbing to 69 from 90 last year. This indicates that graduates are not only landing good jobs but are also advancing in their careers more effectively than their peers from many other top schools.
A Rising Tide for Indian Education
IIMB's success is a powerful signal for Indian higher education as a whole. In total, 14 Indian business schools made it into the top 100 this year, including five in the top 50. This growing presence on a prestigious global list challenges the long-held dominance of European and American institutions. It demonstrates that Indian B-schools are increasingly capable of delivering world-class education and producing graduates who can compete for top jobs anywhere. For prospective students, it means that a globally-recognised, high-value management education is accessible right here in India, reducing the need to look abroad. IIM Ahmedabad (27), SPJIMR (26), XLRI (33), and IIM Calcutta (39) also featured prominently, showcasing the depth of quality in the country's management education landscape.
The Real-World Impact
For students and alumni, a high FT ranking has tangible benefits. It enhances the brand value of their degree, making them more attractive to employers worldwide. The data reflects this: IIM Bangalore saw a significant increase in its 'Weighted Salary' score, demonstrating strong earning outcomes for its alumni. The school also improved its 'Alumni Network' rank, reflecting the growing power and influence of its graduates. Furthermore, the rankings push institutions to improve on all fronts. IIMB's dramatic leap in its carbon footprint rank (from 73 to 13 in 2025) and its improved diversity metrics—with more women on the board and in the student body—show that this global competition encourages positive change beyond just academics and salaries.
