A new way to experience one of South India’s most iconic rail journeys is here. Southern Railway has added a Vistadome coach to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, promising breathtaking, panoramic views of the famed Sengottai-Punalur ghat section.
A Room with a Panoramic View
Imagine
travelling through the Western Ghats with an uninterrupted view of lush valleys, winding tracks, and cascading waterfalls. That is the experience the Vistadome coach aims to provide. These specially designed coaches feature massive glass windows and a transparent glass roof, creating an immersive viewing experience. The coach attached to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express has a capacity of 42 seats. These are not ordinary seats; they are plush, reclining chairs that can rotate 180 degrees, allowing you to face the window directly or turn to converse with fellow travellers. The electrically operated glass roof can even be switched from transparent to translucent, giving passengers control over their viewing environment. With modern amenities like luxury toilets and ample leg space, the journey itself becomes the main attraction.
The Crown Jewel: Sengottai to Punalur
While the entire route from Madurai to Guruvayur connects two major pilgrimage centres, the highlight for sightseers is undoubtedly the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section. This historic line, which crosses from Tamil Nadu into Kerala, is an engineering marvel that winds its way through the mountains of the Western Ghats. The journey here is slow, with speeds limited to allow passengers to soak in the dramatic landscapes. As the train navigates dense forests, deep valleys, and numerous tunnels, the Vistadome coach offers a front-row seat to the region's rich biodiversity. The post-monsoon months are particularly spectacular, with the forests at their greenest and waterfalls like Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty in full flow.
Crossing the Historic 13-Arch Bridge
A standout moment of this rail journey is crossing the ‘Pathimoonu Kannara Palam’, or the 13-Arch Bridge. This iconic, century-old viaduct near Aryankavu is a spectacle of British-era engineering, originally built with limestone and jaggery. Standing nearly 100 feet high, the bridge gracefully connects two hills and offers a stunning vantage point. From inside the Vistadome coach, passengers get a panoramic view of the bridge's architecture and the valley below as the train makes its way across. The route also features several tunnels, including one nearly a kilometre long, adding a sense of adventure to the scenic trip.
How to Plan Your Vistadome Trip
The Vistadome coach has been added to Train No. 16327/16328 (Madurai–Guruvayur–Madurai Express) on a trial basis until mid–January 2027. From Madurai to Guruvayur (Train No. 16327), the service runs on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. On the return journey from Guruvayur to Madurai (Train No. 16328), it operates on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Tickets can be booked via the IRCTC website or app. When booking, be sure to select the 'Executive Vistadome' (EV) class. Due to the limited number of seats, these tickets are in high demand and it is advisable to book well in advance. The fare for the full end–to–end journey is approximately ₹1,875, with prices varying for shorter distances along the route.
