The Dating Game: When to Stop Looking?
Imagine you are destined to date a certain number of people in your life. How do you know when to stop searching and commit, to maximize your chances of finding 'The One'? This is a classic dilemma known in mathematics as the “optimal stopping problem”.
Popularised by mathematician Hannah Fry, the solution is often called the “37% Rule”. The theory suggests you should explore your options for the first 37% of your dating life (or a set number of potential partners). During this initial phase, you don't commit to anyone; you simply establish a benchmark of what a good partner looks like. Then, the rule is to choose the very next person who comes along and is better than everyone you've dated before. This method gives you the highest mathematical probability of picking the best possible partner from your pool of candidates.
The Science of a Stable Couple
Once you're in a relationship, can math predict if it will last? Psychologist John Gottman, in collaboration with mathematician James Murray, has spent decades doing just that. In his “Love Lab,” Gottman observed thousands of couples, tracking everything from their heart rates to their facial expressions during disagreements. By translating these interactions into mathematical equations, they developed models that can predict divorce with startling accuracy—sometimes over 90%. One of their most famous findings is the “magic ratio”: stable and happy couples have at least five positive interactions for every one negative interaction during a conflict. It’s not that successful couples don’t argue, but their arguments are cushioned by affection, humour, and respect, preventing a downward spiral.
The Surprising Power of Low Expectations
Another key insight from Gottman's research involves what he calls the “negativity threshold.” You might assume that the most successful couples are the ones who let small annoyances slide, only speaking up when something becomes a major issue. However, the mathematical models showed the opposite is true. The most resilient relationships actually have a very low negativity threshold. These couples voice their complaints and concerns early and often, treating them as minor issues to be solved together. This prevents small problems from festering and growing into major, relationship-ending conflicts. By constantly repairing these tiny ruptures, they build a stronger, more resilient bond over time.
Game Theory and the Art of Cooperation
Relationships can also be viewed through the lens of game theory, the mathematical study of strategic decision-making. A classic example is the Prisoner's Dilemma, where two partners must decide whether to cooperate or betray each other. If both cooperate, they both get a good outcome. If one betrays the other, the betrayer wins big and the cooperator loses. If both betray each other, they both end up with a terrible outcome. In a relationship, this translates to choosing between selfishness (a noncooperative strategy) and mutual support (a cooperative strategy). While a selfish move might feel good in the short term, game theory shows that the best long-term strategy for both individuals is consistent cooperation. Trust, kindness, and a willingness to forgive are not just romantic ideals; they are the most rational path to a successful and happy partnership.
