The researchers found that, in addition to converting carbon dioxide to oxygen, common houseplants could also absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and benzene from the air. These chemicals are common in homes, released from things like furniture, carpets, paints, and cleaning supplies. A 2019 review by Drexel University researchers found that the natural air exchange in a building cleans the air far more quickly than plants can. To achieve the air-cleaning rates seen in lab studies, they calculated you would need an astonishing 10 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space. Essentially, you would need to live in a dense jungle to make a meaningful difference to your air quality through plants alone.
