An Introduction to the Palace on Wheels
Operated by the IRCTC in partnership with Karnataka's tourism authorities, the Golden Chariot is designed to be a moving palace, offering a luxurious way to explore South India's cultural and natural wonders. The train provides guests with opulent cabins,
multi-cuisine dining cars, a lounge bar named Madira, and even an onboard spa and fitness centre called Arogya. The concept is simple: travel in comfort overnight and wake up in a new destination, ready for a day of curated sightseeing without the hassle of packing and unpacking. The journeys all begin and end in Bengaluru, making it a convenient loop for travellers.
The Classic Sampler: Glimpses of Karnataka
The shortest and most focused itinerary is the 'Glimpses of Karnataka' tour. This three-night, four-day journey is an ideal introduction to the state's treasures. It covers the essentials, starting from Bengaluru and taking guests to the wildlife of Bandipur, the royal city of Mysuru, and the iconic UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi, before returning to Bengaluru. Priced at approximately ₹3,31,500 per person, it offers a condensed but rich experience of Karnataka's most famous landmarks, perfect for those with limited time.
The Expansive New Voyages
The latest schedule introduces two longer itineraries, both running for five nights and six days. The 'Pride of Karnataka' expands significantly on the shorter trip. It includes the core destinations of Bandipur, Mysuru, and Hampi, but adds the architectural marvels of Halebidu, the coffee plantations of Chikkamagaluru, and a final stop to experience the coastal heritage of Goa. The second long-haul option is the 'Jewels of South'. This route ventures beyond Karnataka after stops in Mysuru and Hampi, crossing into Tamil Nadu to visit the temple towns of Mahabalipuram and Thanjavur, and the unique mansions of Chettinad. It then proceeds to Kerala for experiences in Cochin and the serene backwaters of Kumarakom.
A Tale of Two Price Tags
As the headline suggests, the more comprehensive journeys come at a higher cost. Both the 'Pride of Karnataka' and 'Jewels of South' itineraries are priced at approximately ₹4,87,500 per person for a deluxe cabin on a twin-sharing basis. This is a significant step up from the ₹3,31,500 price tag for the 'Glimpses of Karnataka' tour. While the overall cost is higher, the per-night rate shows a different value equation. The five-night journeys offer more destinations and a broader range of experiences, from wildlife and heritage to coastal scenery and coffee estates, justifying the extended duration and investment for those seeking a more immersive exploration of Southern India.
Which Journey Is Right for You?
Choosing the right itinerary depends entirely on your priorities: time, budget, and interests. The 'Glimpses of Karnataka' is perfectly suited for a traveller who wants to experience the pinnacle of Karnataka's heritage in a short span. It is a powerful, concentrated dose of history and nature. In contrast, the 'Pride of Karnataka' is for the completist who wants to see the state's full diversity, from its deep history and royal past to its lush coffee country and breezy coastlines. The 'Jewels of South' is tailored for the cultural explorer keen on a multi-state odyssey, connecting the dots between the distinct architectural and cultural traditions of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. This journey offers a panoramic view of the entire southern region's rich tapestry.
