For years, the promise of satellite internet has been a tantalizing solution to India's persistent digital divide. While urban centres enjoy fast fibre connections, vast swathes of the country remain underserved due to challenging terrain and the high
cost of laying terrestrial cables. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, orbiting just a few hundred kilometres above Earth, represent a technological leap. Unlike older geostationary satellites, LEO networks offer significantly lower latency and higher speeds, making them a viable alternative to traditional broadband. The vision is powerful: seamless connectivity for digital education, telemedicine, disaster management, and economic opportunities in areas fibre cannot reach.
The Players Vying for the Sky
Three major players are at the forefront of this space race in India. Elon Musk’s Starlink is the most globally recognized, aiming for a direct-to-consumer model. Then there is Eutelsat OneWeb, backed by India's own Bharti Group, which has already completed its global satellite constellation and is focused on business-to-business (B2B) services and providing backhaul for terrestrial networks. Finally, Reliance's Jio has entered the fray with JioSpaceFiber, a partnership with satellite operator SES, which also promises to connect remote locations and bolster its existing 5G network. All have received initial licenses but are awaiting the final green light to launch commercially.
The Great Regulatory Wall
The single biggest hurdle for satellite broadband in India is not technology, but regulation. For years, companies have been navigating a complex maze of licensing, security clearances, and spectrum allocation policies. A major breakthrough occurred in early September 2026, when the Digital Communications Commission (DCC) approved a framework for spectrum allocation. It settled on a 5% Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) based on revenue, with a discount to 4% for services in remote areas. While this decision clears a major hurdle, companies still need final cabinet approval and crucial security clearances before they can begin operations. These security checks have been a significant source of delay, with the government assessing risks and mandating that all traffic must pass through gateways located on Indian soil.
The Elephant in the Room: Cost
Even if services launch tomorrow, the question of affordability looms large. India is a notoriously price-sensitive market, where terrestrial broadband plans can start from as low as ₹399 per month. Satellite broadband is fundamentally more expensive. The one-time cost for the user terminal, or antenna, is estimated to be between ₹20,000 and ₹50,000. While some reports suggest monthly plans could be competitive, others indicate they may be positioned as a premium service. The government recently rejected a TRAI proposal to subsidise these terminals, meaning the high entry cost will fall directly on consumers or enterprise clients. This cost structure could limit widespread adoption, positioning satellite internet as a niche solution for affluent users in remote areas or for critical business operations, rather than a mass-market product.
The Path Forward: Niche or Nationwide?
The evidence suggests that satellite broadband will not replace fibre and mobile networks overnight. Instead, its immediate role will be complementary, as TRAI's chairman has stated. It will be a game-changer for enterprise clients in sectors like banking, logistics, and energy that require reliable connectivity in off-grid locations. It will also serve as a vital backhaul service for mobile operators, helping them extend their 4G and 5G reach without laying expensive fibre. For the individual consumer, it remains a promising but expensive option. The technology's ability to truly bridge the digital divide for the average citizen will depend on whether companies can find an India-specific pricing model that works at scale.
