The National Push for Greener Fuel
India's Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program is at the heart of its strategy to reduce dependency on costly imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions, and provide an additional income stream for its farmers. The government has aggressively pursued this
goal, advancing its target for making E20 petrol the standard across the country to 2025, a full five years ahead of the original schedule. The policy is driven by significant economic and environmental incentives, including cutting the massive oil import bill and supporting the agricultural sector by creating a steady market for ethanol feedstock like sugarcane and maize.
E10 vs. E20: Understanding the Blends
The numbers simply refer to the percentage of ethanol mixed with petrol. E10 fuel is a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% petrol, which has been the standard for several years. E20 doubles the ethanol content to 20%. While all new vehicles sold since April 2023 are required to be E20-compliant, the vast majority of cars and two-wheelers on Indian roads were designed for E10 fuel. This distinction is critical, as higher ethanol concentrations can affect engine performance, fuel efficiency, and the longevity of certain components in older, non-compliant vehicles.
The Great Leap to E20
The government's rapid rollout of E20 fuel has been a logistical success, with the blend now available at thousands of outlets nationwide. This swift transition was intended to fast-track the country's green energy goals. However, in the rush to adopt a higher blend, the consistent and universal availability of E10 fuel has become a major issue. This has effectively left millions of vehicle owners in a difficult position, caught between the old standard their vehicles were built for and a new standard they may not be compatible with. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) had warned about this years ago, advocating for E10 to be retained as a 'protection grade' fuel.
An Engine of Debate: Compatibility and Cost
The core of the debate revolves around three key concerns. First, vehicle compatibility. Higher ethanol content can be corrosive to rubber and plastic parts in the fuel systems of older vehicles, potentially leading to leaks and engine damage. Second, fuel efficiency. Ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, meaning it can result in a mileage drop of anywhere from 3% to 7%, forcing consumers to refuel more often. Finally, there's the 'food versus fuel' dilemma. Using crops like sugarcane and maize to produce ethanol has raised concerns about its potential impact on food prices and availability. Recent discussions suggest the government and oil marketing companies are now considering reintroducing E10, possibly as a premium-grade fuel, to address these concerns.
What Does This Mean for Your Vehicle?
For owners of vehicles manufactured before 2023, the situation is confusing. Using E20 in a non-compliant vehicle may lead to a noticeable drop in mileage and, over the long term, could increase maintenance needs. Experts and even auto industry bodies have highlighted the risks, especially for the millions of older two-wheelers that use carburettors, which cannot adjust to the different fuel mixture. While the government and some industry bodies maintain that E20 is safe, public concern has grown, prompting high-level officials to acknowledge the need for an E10 option. Until a clear policy is in place, vehicle owners are left to navigate a fuel landscape where the most suitable option for their engine is not always guaranteed to be available.
