Beyond the Big Numbers
For years, the world has aimed to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, a goal enshrined in the Paris Agreement. This target is not a magical cliff edge, but a scientifically determined point beyond which climate impacts become significantly
more severe. However, focusing solely on whether we meet or miss this goal can obscure a more immediate truth: climate change is not a pass/fail test. The risks to human society and natural ecosystems don't suddenly appear at 1.5°C; they escalate with every incremental increase. Every tenth of a degree brings more intense heatwaves, more erratic rainfall, and greater stress on our planet. The difference between 1.2°C and 1.3°C of warming might sound negligible, but it can translate into millions more people being exposed to life-threatening conditions.
The Domino Effect of Small Changes
The climate system is full of 'tipping points'—thresholds where a small change can trigger a large, rapid, and sometimes irreversible shift. Think of it like tilting a chair: it remains stable until you lean just a fraction too far, and then it suddenly falls. Scientists have identified several of these tipping points, including the collapse of major ice sheets and the die-off of rainforests. The risk of crossing these points increases with each fraction of a degree of warming. Some are already considered at risk, such as the die-off of warm-water coral reefs and the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which could be triggered even below 2°C of warming. This is what scientists call a 'non-linear' system. For a while, things might get progressively worse in a predictable way. But cross a threshold, and the damage can accelerate exponentially. For example, a storm drain can handle a certain amount of rain, but one extra centimetre of water can be the difference between a dry street and a flooded neighbourhood, causing immense damage.
What It Means for India
These fractional increases have profound, tangible consequences for India. The country is already experiencing the impacts of approximately 1.1°C of global warming, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent and intense. A further rise to 1.5°C is projected to make things much worse. For example, India's monsoon, the lifeblood of its agriculture, is becoming more chaotic. Instead of consistent seasonal rain, the country faces longer dry spells punctuated by extreme rainfall events, leading to both droughts and floods. Heatwaves are becoming hotter and more frequent. One analysis projects that at 1.5°C of warming, annual heat-related deaths could increase dramatically. The Himalayan region, which is warming faster than the national average, faces accelerated glacier melt, threatening water security for millions downstream.
More Than Just Heat
The risks extend far beyond temperature. Even a half-degree increase in warming significantly impacts food and water security. Projections suggest that at 1.5°C, wheat yields in India could drop substantially, while irrigated rice yields are also at risk. Water scarcity is another major concern. Changes in monsoon patterns and melting glaciers will disrupt freshwater supplies, increasing competition for an already stressed resource. This can affect everything from drinking water availability to the energy sector, which relies on water for cooling and hydropower. Furthermore, warmer and wetter conditions can expand the habitat for disease-carrying vectors like mosquitoes, increasing the risk of illnesses such as malaria and dengue in new areas. Every fraction of a degree saved lessens these interconnected threats, protecting lives, livelihoods, and our economy.
