Your All-in-One Wildlife Gateway
Imagine booking an entire wildlife adventure—train tickets, resort stays, and the all-important safari permit—with a single click. That is the core promise of Vandarshan, a new series of all-inclusive wildlife tourism packages launched by IRCTC Tourism
in collaboration with the Maharashtra Forest Department. Unveiled on International Tiger Day 2026, the initiative is designed to eliminate the stress and uncertainty that often accompany planning a trip to a popular tiger reserve. For many wildlife enthusiasts, the biggest hurdle is securing a safari permit for parks like Tadoba, where entry slots are released 120 days in advance and can sell out within minutes. Vandarshan packages solve this by bundling a guaranteed safari permit with all other travel necessities, transforming a complex planning process into a straightforward one.
What the Package Includes
The Vandarshan packages are structured as comprehensive four-night, five-day itineraries that cover the entire journey from start to finish. Each booking includes confirmed return train tickets, typically departing from Mumbai CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. Upon arrival at the nearest railhead, the package covers local road transfers to a pre-booked hotel or resort near your chosen wildlife destination. Accommodation and some meals are part of the deal, ensuring a comfortable stay. The highlight, of course, is the inclusion of guided jungle safaris with confirmed permits, allowing you to explore the wilderness without the prior booking frenzy. By consolidating travel, lodging, and park access, the service provides a predictable and hassle-free experience for families, photographers, and adventurers alike.
Exploring Maharashtra’s Wild Heart
These packages focus on the rich biodiversity of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region, covering six key protected areas. This list includes four prominent tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, famous for its high tiger density; Pench, which inspired 'The Jungle Book'; the compact Bor Tiger Reserve; and the scenic Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In addition to these, the packages also provide access to two important wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla, which serves as a vital corridor for tigers from Tadoba, and Tipeshwar, a smaller sanctuary known for a thriving tiger population. It is important for travellers to note that while the initiative is marketed broadly, it specifically covers these six destinations and does not include Maharashtra's other two tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri.
The Journey and Logistics
While the packages promise seamless transfers, it's helpful to understand the travel logistics. The Vidarbha Express serves as the main rail artery, stopping at key stations like Nagpur, Wardha, and Gondia. From these points, dedicated vehicles transfer you to your final destination. For example, accessing the highly sought-after Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve involves a road journey of approximately 140 kilometres from Nagpur, a transfer that is fully managed within the package. For other parks, the connection is more direct. The journey to Navegaon-Nagzira is significantly shorter from its railhead at Gondia, which is about 45 kilometres away. This integrated rail-and-road model ensures that even remote parks become easily accessible.
How to Book and When to Go
Booking a Vandarshan package is done through the official IRCTC Tourism portal. The platform offers five distinct itineraries tailored to different interests, such as family trips or photography-focused tours. Since the entire package is consolidated, you select your destination and travel dates, and all components are booked in one transaction. For those planning a trip, timing is key. The core zones of most of these tiger reserves, including Tadoba and Pench, are closed annually during the monsoon season from late June until September 30. The parks reopen on October 1, making the post-monsoon, winter, and spring months (October to June) the ideal period for a visit, with the summer months of March to June often offering the best opportunities for wildlife sightings.
