From Fording to Floating
Off-road enthusiasts know the term “fording depth”—the maximum depth of water a vehicle can drive through without flooding its engine or critical components. For the new electric Mercedes-Benz G 580, that depth is an impressive 850 mm. But a recent patent
filing suggests Mercedes is thinking beyond just wading through water and is exploring how to drive across it. The patent, filed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG, describes a control system for an SUV designed to manage entering, floating in, and exiting a body of water. This isn't just about waterproofing; it's about buoyancy and aquatic propulsion, turning an off-roader into a temporary boat.
How Would It Work?
The core of the invention involves removable buoyancy modules that would be installed inside the vehicle's wheel arches. The patent describes these as either lightweight foam sections or, more interestingly, inflatable components. A central control unit could inflate or deflate these modules individually at each corner, actively managing the vehicle's stability to counteract an uneven load or water currents. This prevents the vehicle from simply relying on passive flotation. Once in the water, the vehicle wouldn’t need a propeller. Instead, it would use its own wheels for propulsion and steering. The adaptive suspension could lower the wheels deeper into the water to act like rudders, while the drive motors—especially in an electric vehicle with four independent motors like the G 580—could precisely vary the torque and rotation of each wheel. The system could even spin wheels in opposite directions to help steer or hold a course.
Is This for the G-Wagen?
While the patent documents don't name a specific model, referring only to a "two-axle passenger vehicle," the connection to the G-Class is hard to ignore. The all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology is a natural candidate, as it already possesses much of the foundational tech. Its quad-motor setup allows for precise torque vectoring at each wheel, which is exactly what the patent describes for aquatic maneuvering. The G-Class is the brand's ultimate off-road icon, and giving it such a groundbreaking capability would be a major statement. However, Mercedes has not confirmed any plans to integrate this technology into the G-Wagen or any other production vehicle. For now, the link remains speculative but logical.
A Practical Solution?
The patent thoughtfully considers the practicality of such a system. The buoyancy modules, whether foam or inflatable, are designed to be detachable. The document suggests they could be stored in the space typically occupied by a spare wheel. The inflatable versions could even be filled using the standard onboard air compressor that comes with a tire repair kit. This means a driver could carry the system without it being permanently installed, deploying it only when a water crossing is necessary. The patent also details how the control unit would manage the tricky transition from water back to land, applying power precisely to the first wheel that makes contact with the shore to avoid slipping or digging into the bank.
Patent vs. Production Reality
It is crucial to remember that a patent filing is not a product announcement. Automakers file patents for innovative ideas all the time to protect their intellectual property, and many of these concepts never make it to the showroom floor. This amphibious system remains at the patent stage, and Mercedes has given no official indication that a floating SUV is in development for mass production. This isn't the first time Mercedes has explored amphibious ideas, either. The company filed another patent in Germany in late 2025 related to a floating vehicle, suggesting this is an area of ongoing research rather than a one-off idea. This latest filing shows a continued interest in pushing the boundaries of what an off-road vehicle can do, likely spurred by competitors, some of whom already offer vehicles with limited aquatic capabilities.
