What Makes a Geosynchronous Satellite Different?
Most Earth observation satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), circling the planet every 90 minutes or so from a few hundred kilometres up. They capture incredibly detailed images but can only see a particular spot on Earth for a few minutes before
they move on, sometimes taking days to revisit the same location. EOS-05 is completely different. It operates in a geosynchronous orbit nearly 36,000 kilometres away. At this altitude, its orbital speed matches the Earth's rotation, allowing it to stay over the same general region continuously. Instead of quick glimpses, it offers a persistent, unblinking stare over the Indian subcontinent.
A 'First' for India's Space Program
While India has operated weather satellites in geosynchronous orbit for years, such as the INSAT series, their primary job was to monitor atmospheric conditions like clouds and cyclones. EOS-05 is the nation's first satellite specifically designed for high-resolution, frequent imaging of the land and sea from this vantage point. This mission successfully achieves a goal that was previously attempted with the EOS-03 (also known as GISAT-1), which failed to reach orbit in 2021. The successful launch of EOS-05 on the GSLV-F17 rocket represents a significant national accomplishment and a major boost for India's strategic capabilities.
The Power to See and Revisit
The true strength of EOS-05 lies in its revisit capability. The satellite is designed to image the entire Indian landmass approximately every 30 minutes. Crucially, for areas of high interest—like a developing cyclone, a spreading forest fire, or a sensitive border region—it can be directed to capture images as frequently as every five minutes. It does this using advanced imaging payloads, including multi-spectral and hyperspectral sensors. This means it doesn't just take pictures; it sees across different wavelengths of light to analyze crop health, water quality, and land use in ways the human eye cannot.
A Game-Changer for Disaster Management
For a country prone to natural disasters, EOS-05's capabilities are transformative. The ability to continuously monitor fast-developing events like floods, cyclones, and forest fires provides an unprecedented advantage for early warning systems and disaster response agencies. By providing a near-real-time stream of data, authorities can track a disaster's progress, assess damage more accurately, and direct relief efforts to where they are most needed. This persistent monitoring can help save lives and minimize economic damage by allowing for more informed and rapid decision-making on the ground.
