The End of the Security Scramble
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is in the process of a significant upgrade to its security screening procedures, rolling out new scanners that allow passengers to keep electronics and liquids in their hand luggage. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul
Griffiths, the initiative is designed to make the security process “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient” for the millions who travel through the global hub. This change means the long-standing requirement to remove items like laptops, tablets, and liquids from carry-on bags will be gradually phased out, significantly speeding up processing times and reducing a common point of stress for passengers. The upgrade is part of a continuous programme to replace older technology across the airport.
How the New Technology Works
The new system is powered by advanced Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, similar to the technology used in the medical field. These machines, provided by contractor Smiths Detection, create high-resolution 3D images of the contents of a bag, allowing security staff to conduct a more thorough and accurate inspection without items being removed. Traditional 2D X-ray scanners provide a flatter, more cluttered image, making it necessary to separate dense electronics like laptops. The new AI-powered scanners can effectively see through the clutter, automatically identifying objects and flagging potential threats with greater precision.
Where Are the New Scanners?
The rollout of this advanced technology is not limited to a single terminal. Dubai Airports has confirmed that the new scanners are being installed across all three terminals (1, 2, and 3) as part of a wider refurbishment and upgrade plan. CEO Paul Griffiths has stated that some machines are already in use, and passengers may encounter them on their travels. The goal is to eventually replace all older screening systems so that every customer travelling through DXB benefits from the same convenient and streamlined experience. The phased implementation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
What Stays in Your Bag?
At the new screening points, passengers will be able to leave large electronic devices like laptops, tablets, and cameras inside their hand luggage. The rules for liquids are also being relaxed. The new CT technology allows for the screening of liquids without them needing to be taken out and placed in a separate plastic bag, as has been the standard practice for years. This upgrade eliminates one of the biggest hassles of airport security, making the journey smoother for everyone from business travellers with laptops to families carrying liquids and creams.

By reducing the need to unpack and repack bags, the airport can significantly increase passenger throughput at security checkpoints, leading to shorter queues and less congestion. The new lanes are often paired with automated tray return systems, further increasing efficiency. This move follows other tech-driven initiatives at DXB, such as the smart gates and AI-powered biometric corridors that speed up immigration processes, reinforcing Dubai's position as a global leader in aviation innovation.
