An Unthinkable Night
The story begins with Georgekutty (played by Mohanlal), a simple, film-obsessed cable operator living a quiet life in a Keralan village with his wife Rani and two daughters, Anju and Anu. This peace is shattered when Varun Prabhakar, the son of the Inspector
General of Police, Geetha Prabhakar, arrives to blackmail the elder daughter, Anju. Varun had secretly filmed Anju during a school trip and uses the video to threaten her. During a tense confrontation at their home, he attempts to force himself on Anju and her mother. In the ensuing struggle, Anju accidentally strikes Varun with an object, leading to his death. Faced with an impossible situation, the family's patriarch, Georgekutty, steps in. Rather than surrendering to the law, he decides to protect his family at all costs, setting in motion one of the most elaborate cover-ups in cinematic history.
The Perfect Alibi
Drawing inspiration from the countless films he has watched, Georgekutty constructs a seemingly unbreakable alibi. He moves Varun's body from the compost pit where it was initially buried and hides it under the floor of a police station that is under construction. He understands that no one would ever think to search for a body right under the noses of the police. He then meticulously drills his family on a fabricated story: that on the day of the incident, they all travelled to a nearby town for a religious discourse, ate at a restaurant, and watched a movie. By creating fake tickets and receipts and planting memories with unsuspecting people they meet, Georgekutty builds a visual trail—a 'drishyam'—to corroborate their lie. When the police investigation, led by Varun's own mother, begins, the family holds firm, reciting their alibi despite brutal interrogation tactics. The police dig up the compost pit only to find the carcass of a calf, cementing Georgekutty's first victory.
Six Years of Silence
Drishyam 2 picks up six years later. Georgekutty has prospered, now owning a movie theatre and aspiring to produce his own film. However, the family lives in a state of quiet trauma. Anju suffers from PTSD and seizures, and Rani is consumed by fear and guilt. The town's gossip has never stopped, and the police, still smarting from their defeat, remain deeply suspicious. The new IG, Thomas Bastin, reopens the case, determined to succeed where his predecessor failed. The family’s carefully constructed peace begins to crumble when an eyewitness from the night of the murder, a convict named Jose who saw Georgekutty near the police station construction site, is released from prison and informs the authorities.
The Skeleton Tumbles Out
The police excavate the floor of the police station and, to the public's shock, discover skeletal remains. The net appears to be closing on Georgekutty once and for all. Undercover officers who had been posing as neighbours manage to secretly record Rani making an inadvertent confession. Facing overwhelming pressure and wanting to protect his family from further trauma, Georgekutty publicly confesses to the crime, claiming responsibility for everything. He is arrested, and it seems that the master strategist has finally been outmaneuvered. The case goes to court, with the prosecution feeling confident that they have finally cornered their man. The recovered skeleton is sent for a DNA test to officially identify it as Varun Prabhakar, the final piece of evidence needed for a conviction.
The Final Ashes
In a stunning courtroom twist, the DNA results come back negative. The skeleton is not Varun's. The case against Georgekutty collapses. The climax reveals the true genius of his long-term plan. Georgekutty had always known that the body might one day be found. For years, he had been planning for this very eventuality. While writing a script for his own movie, he befriended a screenwriter and used the guise of storytelling to lay out the plot of his own crime. He had also befriended a security guard at a local morgue. Years prior, he had identified the remains of another young man of similar age who had died of similar injuries. Before the police could conduct their DNA test, Georgekutty had switched the skeletons. The bones the police found were a plant. His true masterstroke, however, was what he did with Varun’s actual remains. He had them secretly cremated. The film ends with Georgekutty anonymously sending Varun's ashes to his parents, allowing them to finally perform his last rites while ensuring there is no physical evidence left to connect him to the crime.
