The Final Bow for an Engineering Icon
For two decades, the Bugatti W16 engine has been a titan of the automotive world. This 8.0-litre, quad-turbocharged behemoth, first introduced in the Veyron, redefined what was possible for a road car. The W16 Mistral is its final, spectacular performance.
Producing a staggering 1,600 PS, the Mistral was conceived as the definitive open-top Bugatti experience and the last road-going model to feature this iconic powerplant. Knowing this was the end of an era, Bugatti ensured the Mistral would be more than just a car; it would be a legacy. The decision to limit production to just 99 units, all of which were sold out before the car was even publicly revealed, was the first step in cementing its legendary status.
The Art of 'Sur Mesure'
The secret to making every Mistral unique lies in Bugatti's exclusive personalization program, 'Sur Mesure', which translates to 'tailored'. This is not your average car configurator. The Sur Mesure program is an immersive, collaborative journey where each of the 99 owners works directly with Bugatti's designers and engineers to create a vehicle that is a true reflection of their personality. The process often begins with a visit to the brand's home in Molsheim, France, for inspiration. From there, almost no detail is off-limits. The program builds on Bugatti's long history of coachbuilding, applying that heritage to modern hypercars.
A Canvas of Carbon Fibre and Leather
Through Sur Mesure, a Mistral becomes a blank canvas. Customization options range from developing a completely new exterior paint colour to hand-painting intricate patterns that can take weeks to perfect. One owner, for instance, commissioned the 'Fly Bug', which features a bespoke 'Dragonfly Blue' paint that shifts from blue to turquoise, mimicking the wings of a dragonfly. Another creation, the 'Blanc Éternel', incorporates hand-applied porcelain elements into its design. The level of detail extends to every surface. The interior can feature hand-woven leather patterns on the door panels, unique to the Mistral, or embroidery that tells a personal story. Even the gear shifter, which typically features a 'Dancing Elephant' sculpture, has been customized. The final Mistral produced, for example, features a bespoke aluminum falcon head, a nod to the owner's heritage.
More Than a Car, It's an Identity
For a starting price of €5 million, owners weren't just buying a car; they were commissioning a piece of automotive art. This level of personalization is a core part of the business strategy in the ultra-luxury market. It transforms a product into a personal statement and a one-of-one asset. Each Mistral tells a different story, reflecting the tastes and passions of its owner. This strategy ensures that even within an exclusive club of 99 people, individuality reigns supreme. The result is that no two Mistrals will ever be parked next to each other and be mistaken for the same. Each is a distinct creation, from its paint finish down to the stitching on its seats.
