A New Heart: The Desmo450 Engine
The soul of this new machine is Ducati's all-new Desmo450 engine, a 449.6 cc single-cylinder powerhouse first developed for the brand's ambitious entry into world motocross. This isn't just another engine; it’s a statement. It features Ducati's signature
Desmodromic valve system, which mechanically opens and closes the valves instead of relying on springs. This allows the engine to rev higher and more reliably than conventional designs, reaching a screaming 11,900 rpm. While the motocross version produces around 63.5 horsepower, Ducati has confirmed the supermoto engine is specifically tuned for on-tarmac racing, prioritizing blistering acceleration out of tight corners. This Desmo advantage provides a broad, usable torque curve, ensuring power is always on tap.
Built for Battle, Not Just the Boulevard
While Ducati has its popular road-going Hypermotard range, the Desmo450 SM is a different animal entirely. This is a purpose-built racing prototype, designed to compete in the premier S1GP class of the Supermoto World Championship. The bike was unveiled at World Ducati Week as a clear signal of intent. It borrows its foundation from the Desmo450 MX motocross bike, including a lightweight aluminum perimeter frame designed for maximum rigidity and rider feedback. However, Ducati insists this is far more than just a motocross bike with different wheels. The entire package, from suspension to brakes and engine components, has been specifically developed for supermoto.
Precision in Every Component
Supermoto is a sport of inches, where braking power and cornering grip are paramount. The Desmo450 SM prototype reflects this with a suite of high-performance components. Observations from its reveal show a massive Brembo front brake caliper grabbing a large Galfer disc, promising incredible stopping power. The suspension is handled by specialists Showa, though with custom settings for the unique demands of sliding a bike on tarmac. It rolls on lightweight Excel Takasago rims, likely a 16.5-inch front and 17-inch rear, shod with sticky Metzeler race tires. This combination is all about maximizing agility and feedback, allowing riders to push the limits of adhesion with confidence.
A New Contender in a Fierce Arena
Ducati isn't entering this category quietly. It has already been testing a prototype in the Supermoto World Championship with four-time world champion Marc-Reiner Schmidt, who has already secured victories with the new platform. This race-driven development provides crucial data that will directly influence the final production model, which is expected to be officially launched in September. By bringing its MotoGP and World Superbike-honed electronic expertise, including advanced traction control systems, to the single-cylinder off-road world, Ducati is challenging the established order. The arrival of a factory-backed, race-ready machine from Borgo Panigale is set to inject a huge dose of Italian engineering and excitement into a category built on precision and skill.
