A World of Flavours, Acknowledged
Recent lists published by the international food and travel guide TasteAtlas have again highlighted the global appeal of Indian cuisine. In various rankings for 2024, 2025, and into 2026, several Indian dishes have secured top spots among the world's
best foods. Butter Garlic Naan, for instance, has been ranked as high as number seven in the “100 Best Dishes in the World” and even named the best bread in the world. Hyderabadi Biryani has also consistently featured, celebrated as a must-try dish and making its way into the top 100 lists. These rankings, compiled from thousands of user ratings, showcase a worldwide appreciation for the complex flavours and rich traditions that Indian food offers, placing it firmly on the global culinary map.
Hyderabadi Biryani: The Royal Icon
For many, biryani is more than just a dish; it's an emotion, and Hyderabadi Biryani often reigns supreme. Its fame lies in a meticulous preparation method known as 'dum pukht', a slow-cooking technique perfected in the royal kitchens of the Nizams of Hyderabad. This process involves layering fragrant, long-grain Basmati rice with marinated meat and a complex blend of spices like saffron, cloves, and cardamom. The pot, or handi, is sealed with dough to trap the steam, allowing the ingredients to cook in their own juices. This results in incredibly tender meat and rice where every grain is infused with flavour and aroma. It’s this regal history and intricate cooking process that elevates Hyderabadi Biryani from a simple rice dish to a celebrated culinary masterpiece.
Butter Garlic Naan: The Perfect Partner
While Hyderabadi Biryani can be a meal in itself, no Indian feast feels complete without the perfect bread. Enter Butter Garlic Naan. This soft, leavened flatbread has its roots in Persian and Mughal cuisine, traditionally cooked in a tandoor, or clay oven. The high heat of the tandoor gives naan its signature pillowy texture with delicious charred spots. While plain naan is a classic, the modern addition of minced garlic and a generous brushing of melted butter has created a global sensation. It’s the ultimate comfort food and the perfect vehicle for scooping up rich gravies like Butter Chicken or Shahi Paneer. Its recognition as one of the world's best breads is a testament to its simple yet irresistible appeal.
The Best of the Rest
Beyond these two titans, India's culinary depth is well-represented in global rankings. Dishes like Murgh Makhani (Butter Chicken), Tikka, and Amritsari Kulcha frequently appear alongside Naan and Biryani as some of the best-rated foods. Butter Chicken, with its creamy tomato-based sauce, and Tikka, featuring yogurt-marinated grilled meat, have become ambassadors for Indian food worldwide. Other mainstays like Shahi Paneer, Chole Bhature, and various kebabs also earn high marks, showcasing the incredible diversity of the country's cuisine. Even Garam Masala, the quintessential Indian spice blend, receives recognition as a 'must-try' product, underscoring that the magic of Indian food lies as much in its spices as in its star dishes.
