A Floral Spectacle at 10,600 Feet
In a stunning contrast to its rugged, barren mountains, Ladakh is now home to what are being called the world's highest-altitude twin flower fields. Spread across 40 acres near Leh at Choglamsar and Stakna, these gardens are a riot of colour at an elevation
of 10,600 feet. The fields feature an overwhelming majority of Liliums, with over 24 lakh planted, complemented by around one lakh Gladiolus. Visitors can witness a sea of yellow, white, orange, and red blooms set against the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayas, creating an unforgettable visual experience that redefines the popular image of the cold desert.
The Vision Behind the Blooms
This colourful spectacle is part of a deliberate initiative by the Ladakh administration to diversify the region's agriculture and create new economic opportunities. Inaugurated in mid-September 2026 by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, the project aims to establish commercial floriculture as a viable livelihood for local farmers. The gardens are more than just a tourist attraction; they are intended to serve as demonstration and training centres. The goal is to equip local farmers and self-help groups with the skills for scientific cultivation, post-harvest management, and tapping into the high-value national and international markets for ornamental flowers like Liliums, Gladioli, and Tulips.
A Staggered Bloom for a Longer Season
The administration has planned the plantations to extend the viewing season for as long as possible. The field at Choglamsar, where planting began in July, saw its first flowers in early September. Meanwhile, the Stakna field, with nearly 14 lakh Liliums planted in August, is expected to reach full bloom towards the end of October. This staggered approach means that visitors have a longer window to witness the floral beauty, with each garden offering a different stage of the bloom depending on the timing of their visit. This thoughtful planning helps make the attraction more resilient and accessible to tourists arriving throughout the autumn season.
How to Visit This New Wonder
The twin gardens opened to the public on September 18, 2026, instantly becoming a new must-see attraction for those visiting Leh. A nominal entry fee has been put in place to ensure the gardens are well-maintained for all to enjoy. Adults are charged Rs 25, while the entry for children is Rs 10. The revenue generated from ticket sales will be used directly for the upkeep and maintenance of the floral fields. Located at Choglamsar and Stakna, both sites are easily accessible from Leh, adding a convenient and colourful stop to any Ladakhi itinerary that traditionally focuses on monasteries, lakes, and high-altitude passes.
