A Global Stamp of Approval
In the latest rankings for 2025/2026 released by TasteAtlas, an influential online guide for traditional food and authentic restaurants, Indian cuisine was ranked 13th best in the world. While Italy and Greece took the top spots, India's placement confirms
its enduring and growing appeal to food lovers everywhere. TasteAtlas compiles its rankings based on tens of thousands of user ratings for dishes and food products, aiming to create a global map of food culture. For India to consistently feature so highly is a testament to the depth and flavour of its culinary traditions, moving beyond simplistic international stereotypes of just being 'spicy'.
The Undisputed King: Hyderabadi Biryani
While the overall cuisine ranking is a collective achievement, certain dishes carry the flag with distinction. Hyderabadi Biryani stands tall among them. In a recent list of the 'World's Best Rice Dishes', it was the only Indian dish to crack the top 10, a significant honour. This iconic dish, with its roots in the kitchens of the Nizams, is a masterclass in balance and technique. The magic lies in the 'dum pukht' method, where marinated meat and partially cooked rice are layered and slow-cooked in a sealed pot. This process allows the fragrant basmati rice, succulent meat, and a complex blend of spices and saffron to meld together, creating a dish that is far more than the sum of its parts.
The Mighty Indian Breads
The headline's other hero is not a single dish, but an entire, beloved category: Indian breads. According to TasteAtlas's user ratings, several Indian flatbreads are ranked among the best in the world. Butter Garlic Naan has achieved a phenomenal rating, often appearing near the very top of global bread lists. But the acclaim doesn't stop there. Amritsari Kulcha, a crisp, stuffed bread from Punjab, also boasts a high ranking. The flaky, layered Parotta from the south, the everyday staple Roti, and the classic plain Naan are all recognized for their unique textures and flavours. This proves that the humble accompaniments to our gravies and kebabs are culinary stars in their own right, showcasing a diversity that few other cuisines can match.
A Symphony of Flavours
India's high ranking isn't just about biryani and bread. The country's culinary strength lies in its incredible range. TasteAtlas's lists of 'must-try' Indian foods feature a wide array of dishes from across the nation. Items like Murgh Makhani (Butter Chicken), the ever-popular Masala Dosa, and even the spice mix Garam Masala itself receive high praise from global users. Street food stars from Maharashtra like Misal and Vada Pav also contribute to the overall score, demonstrating that flavour isn't confined to fine-dining establishments. From the coastal delicacies of Kerala and West Bengal to the rich curries of the north, it's this regional variety that creates such a powerful global impression.
