The real prize is the ability to walk directly behind the curtain of water, an experience similar to the famous Seljalandsfoss but often enjoyed in relative solitude. The path into the gorge is mostly flat, making it an easy and rewarding detour for those looking to escape the hustle and connect with nature. While the waterfall itself is free to visit, there is a parking fee at the museum.
Brúarfoss: Iceland's Bluest Waterfall
Known for its almost impossibly blue water, Brúarfoss is a network of countless small rivulets and cascades that converge into a single, vibrant, U-shaped chute. Its striking colour comes from glacial meltwater, creating a photogenic scene that contrasts beautifully with the dark volcanic rock. For years, its relative seclusion was guaranteed by a 7-kilometer round-trip hike. While that beautiful, muddy trail still exists for adventurous walkers (passing two smaller falls on the way), a new, paid car park has opened just a five-minute walk from the main viewpoint, making it more accessible. Despite the easier access, Brúarfoss remains far less crowded than its Golden Circle counterparts like Gullfoss, offering a moment of colorful calm.
Aldeyjarfoss: Basalt Beauty in the North
For travellers with a 4x4 and a sense of adventure, Aldeyjarfoss in North Iceland offers a truly otherworldly sight. This powerful 20-metre waterfall is framed by a dramatic amphitheatre of perfectly formed black basalt columns, a result of lava flowing and cooling thousands of years ago. Its remote location is what preserves its peaceful atmosphere. Situated about 40 kilometers from the Ring Road down a gravel road that becomes a highland F-road, it is inaccessible to standard rental cars and large tour buses. The drive through the Bárðardalur valley is scenic, and the final short walk from the car park leads you to a breathtaking view of the churning white water against the stark, geometric basalt. It’s a prime example of Iceland's raw, geological artistry, far from the beaten path.
Gluggafoss: The Window Waterfall
Also known as Merkjárfoss, Gluggafoss is a unique waterfall in South Iceland with a fascinating story. Its name, meaning “Window Falls,” comes from the way the water has eroded tunnels and openings—or 'windows'—into the soft palagonite rock of the cliff face. For decades, the main flow was hidden inside the cliff, visible only through these holes. Volcanic ash from an eruption eventually filled the tunnels, forcing the water to cascade over the front once more, but the geological features remain. Located just a short detour from the main road between Hvolsvöllur and Seljalandsfoss, it receives a fraction of the visitors of its famous neighbours. A gentle path leads to the base, offering a quiet place to admire its unusual structure and the peaceful surrounding farmland.
Hjálparfoss: The Helping Falls
Set in the lava fields north of the volcano Hekla, Hjálparfoss is a beautiful twin waterfall where two rivers, the Fossá and Þjórsá, join in a wide, placid pool. Its name translates to “Helping Falls,” a nod to past travellers who, after a long and difficult journey across the desolate Sprengisandur highland route, would rejoice upon reaching this verdant area where they could finally find water and grass for their horses. The falls are framed by twisted, dark basalt columns, creating a serene and striking landscape. While it is located off the main tourist trail, it is easily accessible by a regular car and requires only a very short walk from the car park. It’s an ideal stop for those exploring the Þjórsárdalur valley and seeking a moment of peace at a historically significant and visually stunning location.
