Dubai Airports has confirmed it is gradually installing a new generation of advanced security scanners across its terminals. This major technology upgrade is aimed at making the security screening process significantly faster, more convenient, and less

The CEO of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, has stated that the investment is part of a wider effort to make the entire airport journey more efficient. The goal is to phase out older equipment, eventually allowing every passenger to benefit from the new, streamlined process.
How the New Technology Works
The secret behind this upgrade lies in Computed Tomography (CT) scanning technology, similar to what is used in the medical field. These new scanners create detailed 3D images of the contents of your hand luggage, allowing security staff to get a clear view of everything inside without needing you to unpack. Paired with sophisticated AI algorithms, the system can automatically identify potential threats with a high degree of accuracy, reducing the need for manual bag checks and minimising false alarms. This advanced imaging capability is what makes it possible to leave electronics and liquids inside your bag.
What This Means for Your Next Trip
Once fully implemented, the benefits for travellers will be immediate and substantial. The most significant change will be the end of the routine requirement to remove laptops, tablets, and liquids from hand luggage. This is expected to dramatically speed up queues at security checkpoints, a welcome relief at one of the world's busiest international airports. When Can You Expect This Change?
The rollout is already underway. According to Dubai Airports' CEO, some of the new machines have already been installed as part of a continuous and gradual upgrade program across all terminals. While trials began in 2025, the full replacement of older systems is a phased project. Some reports indicate the project could be completed across all terminals by the end of 2026. However, because the rollout is gradual, travellers should not yet assume every security lane is equipped with the new technology. While the technology allows for liquids to remain in bags, travellers should be aware that restrictions, such as the 100ml limit on liquid containers, have not officially been abolished at DXB yet.
