Mercedes-Benz has filed a patent for what is officially described as a vehicle control system for entering and exiting a body of water. In simpler terms, the German automaker is engineering a way for an SUV to become amphibious. This isn't about merely
driving through deep water, a feat the current electric G-Class already handles with impressive depth. This patent outlines a system for a vehicle to achieve buoyancy, navigate on the water's surface, and climb back onto dry land without assistance. The filing, credited to inventor Joerg Kneip, details a comprehensive approach to turning an off-roader into a temporary boat, signaling a bold new direction in the company's research and development.
How an SUV Could Become a Boat
The technology described in the patent relies on two main concepts: creating buoyancy and enabling propulsion. To float, the system proposes using removable flotation devices, likely made of foam or as inflatable sections, that are installed inside the vehicle’s wheel arches. A computer control unit could manage the inflation of these modules independently to keep the vehicle level and stable, compensating for an uneven load or water currents. For propulsion, the vehicle wouldn't rely on a traditional propeller. Instead, it would use its own wheels. The patent suggests that by using the vehicle’s adaptive suspension and the individual electric motors at each wheel, the system could spin the tyres to act as paddles. The front wheels could also be lowered deeper into the water to act as rudders for steering. The control system would even manage the tricky transition from floating to driving, applying precise power to the wheels as they regain contact with the ground to prevent slipping.
The Obvious Electric G-Class Connection
While the patent documents do not specifically name the G-Class, it is widely seen as the most logical candidate for such technology. The recently launched all-electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology already possesses the foundational architecture that would make this amphibious system possible. It features four individually controlled electric motors, one for each wheel, which allows for incredibly precise torque distribution. This is the same technology that enables its impressive 'G-TURN' function, where the vehicle can turn on the spot. An amphibious system that requires independent wheel control for propulsion and steering would be a natural, if extreme, extension of these existing capabilities. The idea is to reassure adventure enthusiasts that the G-Class's legendary character will not fade in the electric era, but will instead be enhanced.
Ambition, Competition, and Staying on Top
Mercedes-Benz isn't developing this technology in a vacuum. In recent years, several Chinese automakers have demonstrated electric SUVs with the ability to float, using it as a dramatic proof point of their engineering prowess. This patent can be seen as a strategic move by Mercedes to not only match but potentially surpass these new competitors. For a brand that has built its reputation on luxury and superior engineering, allowing rivals to claim a unique and headline-grabbing capability is not an option. By patenting a highly sophisticated and integrated system, Mercedes is signaling its intent to remain the king of the luxury off-road segment.
