This scientific seal of approval helped the claim take root, turning countless homes and offices into mini-jungles in the hope of breathing cleaner, healthier air. What the NASA Study Actually Found
The legendary NASA Clean Air Study did, in fact, show that certain common houseplants could remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene and formaldehyde from the air. The research, led by scientist Bill Wolverton, was designed to find ways to clean the air in sealed environments, such as space stations. To do this, researchers placed individual plants inside small, hermetically sealed chambers (typically about one cubic meter) and injected a single VOC. Over a period of hours or days, they observed that the plants did absorb a significant percentage of the pollutant. Some plants, like the Peace Lily and English Ivy, were found to be particularly effective under these controlled lab conditions.
From Sealed Chamber to Living Room
Here's where the popular claim begins to wilt. The conditions of the NASA study are vastly different from the environment in a typical home or office. The study used small, airtight chambers, whereas our homes are much larger and are constantly exchanging air with the outdoors through windows, doors, and ventilation systems. This natural air exchange rate dilutes pollutants much more effectively and quickly than a few houseplants can. Subsequent analysis and reviews of the original study have concluded that the impact of plants in a real-world setting is minimal. The science wasn't wrong, but its application has been widely misinterpreted.
The Numbers Don't Add Up
To truly replicate the air-cleaning effects seen in the lab, you would need an almost impossible number of plants. A 2019 review published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology crunched the numbers. The researchers concluded you would need anywhere from 10 to 1,000 plants per square meter of floor space to significantly impact indoor air quality. For an average 1,500-square-foot home, that could mean having over 680 plants to see a noticeable benefit. Essentially, you would need to turn your home into a dense greenhouse for your plants to compete with the air-clearing capacity of a building's standard ventilation.
The Real, Proven Benefits of Plants
So, should you get rid of your beloved fiddle-leaf fig? Absolutely not. While they may not be the powerful air purifiers we once thought, houseplants offer numerous other well-documented benefits. Studies have shown that the presence of indoor plants can reduce stress, improve mood, sharpen attention, and boost productivity. How to Actually Clean Your Air

The most effective method is ventilation: simply opening your windows to allow fresh air to circulate. Using exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to remove pollutants at the source is also crucial. For more targeted removal of airborne particles and VOCs, consider investing in a mechanical air purifier with a HEPA filter.
