One of the World's Highest Airports
Leh Airport sits at a staggering altitude of 3,256 metres (10,682 feet) above sea level, making it the highest commercial airport in India and one of the highest globally. This elevation poses significant challenges. The air is much thinner, which reduces
aircraft engine performance and the lift generated by the wings. Pilots require specialised training to handle the conditions, and aircraft need longer runways to achieve the necessary speed for takeoff. This extreme altitude is the defining feature of Leh Airport, influencing every aspect of its design and operations.
A Pilot's Ultimate Challenge
Landing at Leh is considered one of the most difficult and visually stunning approaches in the world. Due to the surrounding mountain terrain, the airport has a unidirectional approach, meaning planes can only land from one direction and take off from the other. Flights are restricted to the morning hours, as strong mountain winds pick up in the afternoon, making operations unsafe. Pilots must navigate through a narrow valley, relying on visual flight rules (VFR) because the mountainous terrain interferes with standard instrument landing systems. This makes every landing a testament to pilot skill.
Critical Strategic Importance
Leh Airport is a dual-purpose facility, serving both civilian and military needs, which makes it strategically vital for India. It functions as a crucial air bridge for the Indian Armed Forces, enabling the transport of troops, supplies, and equipment to forward positions in the sensitive border regions of Ladakh, especially during harsh winters when roads are closed. Recently, a second runway, or parallel taxi track, was constructed to enhance strategic readiness, ensure operational continuity, and handle increasing air traffic. This upgrade solidifies its role as a key defence asset.
A New, Sustainable Terminal
To meet growing tourism and regional demand, the airport is undergoing a massive expansion with a new state-of-the-art terminal building. As of mid-2026, the project is nearing completion and is expected to increase passenger handling capacity to 3.5 million annually, a significant jump from the previous 1.5 million. The design reflects Buddhist philosophy and incorporates modern, passenger-friendly amenities. This new terminal will transform the passenger experience and support Ladakh's socio-economic development by boosting tourism and connectivity.
Pioneering Green Energy
The new terminal building is set to make Leh Airport India's first to operate on a hybrid geothermal and solar power system. This innovative approach aims to make the facility carbon-neutral, a significant step for an airport in such an ecologically sensitive region. The geothermal system will be used for heating the building in the freezing winters, while a large rooftop solar plant will generate electricity. This commitment to sustainability is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 900 tonnes per year, setting a new standard for green infrastructure in the country.
