A Strategic Alliance for Tourism
On July 27, 2026, Air India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India's Ministry of Tourism, becoming the first global airline to formally partner with the ministry. This agreement establishes a framework for the two organisations to jointly
promote India as a premier travel destination. The collaboration will leverage the airline's expanding international network and the government's flagship 'Incredible India' campaign to boost inbound tourism and enhance the country's visibility on the world stage. The partnership focuses on coordinated efforts in marketing, destination storytelling, and improving the overall visitor experience.
More Than Just Marketing
This pact goes beyond simple advertising. It outlines a multi-pronged strategy that includes co-branded global marketing campaigns across digital, social media, and inflight branding. The collaboration will also involve joint participation in international tourism exhibitions, roadshows, and familiarisation trips for tour operators and travel trade partners. A key aspect of the deal is a focus on developing transit and stopover tourism. By creating attractive stopover programs, Air India and the Tourism Ministry hope to encourage international passengers connecting through hubs like Delhi and Mumbai to extend their layovers and explore India, a model successfully used by Gulf carriers.
Spotlighting a 'New India'
For Air India, this partnership is a core part of its reinvention under the Tata Group. The airline's leadership has expressed a sense of responsibility to serve as an ambassador for a "new India" that is described as confident, vibrant, and welcoming. This initiative aligns with the airline's significant investments in new aircraft, refurbished cabins, and improved onboard services. By showcasing India’s diverse cultural, heritage, and natural offerings through its extensive network, which already spans 40 international destinations across five continents, Air India aims to become a primary channel for telling the 'Incredible India' story to a global audience.
The Broader Economic Vision
The MoU is designed to be a powerful engine for both tourism and aviation growth. By strengthening India’s position as a key aviation and transit hub, the pact aims to capture a larger share of global travel. The agreement also involves working closely with State Tourism Boards to highlight a wider array of destinations across the country, ensuring that the benefits of increased tourism are distributed more broadly. The partnership will also explore integrating tourism-linked incentives into Air India's loyalty program and developing a 'Visit India Pass' to encourage deeper exploration of the country's attractions.
