What is the New Token System?
Indian Railways has begun implementing a token system for Tatkal tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters to manage the intense demand. Instead of one long, chaotic queue, passengers now collect a numbered token that determines their place
in line. This initiative, which started rolling out from August 1, 2026, in selected railway zones, aims to make the offline booking process more organised, transparent, and less stressful for everyone involved. Passengers can wait comfortably for their number to be called instead of standing for hours. It's important to note this system is only for counter bookings and does not affect Tatkal reservations made online via the IRCTC website or app.
How It Works: A Step-by-Step Guide
Navigating the new system is straightforward if you know the process. First, you must visit the station's reservation counter during the designated token distribution window, which is before the actual booking starts. Tokens for AC classes (like 2A, 3A, CC) are typically issued between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC classes (Sleeper, 2S), the window is generally from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Once you have your token, you can leave the queue and return when booking begins. When your number is announced, you proceed to the counter with your completed reservation form and a valid photo ID to book your ticket. These tokens are non-transferable, meaning only the person who collected it can use it for booking.
Why This Change Was Necessary
The primary goal of the token system is to curb the chaos and frantic rush that define counter Tatkal bookings. The hours leading up to the opening of the Tatkal window are often marked by long, unmanaged queues, arguments, and the presence of unauthorised agents or 'touts' who occupy spots. By assigning a numbered token, the system ensures a fair, first-come-first-served process in an orderly fashion. It eliminates the need for passengers to physically hold their place in line for hours on end, significantly improving crowd management and making the experience safer and more convenient for genuine travellers. Some railway divisions have also introduced a priority system, with 'Category A' tokens for those booking for immediate family and 'Category B' for others, further streamlining the process.
The All-Important Booking Window
The new token system makes understanding the booking timings more crucial than ever. While tokens are distributed earlier, the actual Tatkal booking windows remain unchanged: bookings for all AC classes open at 10:00 AM, and for all non-AC classes, they open at 11:00 AM. Arriving early to get a token is only the first step. You must be present when your number is called shortly after the respective window opens. Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens, for instance, 10 for AC and 15 for non-AC classes, though this can vary. If you miss the token distribution window, you miss your chance for an early spot in the queue. Success depends on aligning your visit with both the token issuance time and the official booking start time.
Tips for a Smoother Booking Experience
To maximise your chances, preparation is key. First, confirm if your local station has implemented the token system, as it's being rolled out in phases. Arrive well before the token distribution starts (before 8:30 AM for AC, before 9:00 AM for non-AC). Have your Tatkal reservation form completely filled out beforehand to save precious time at the counter. Most importantly, carry a valid, original government-issued photo ID, such as an Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Driving Licence, as this is mandatory for booking. Some zones require the ID for both the person booking and the travelling family member to get a priority token. If all token holders are served and seats are still available, the counter may open for walk-ins, but relying on this is a gamble.
