The African sour fig, known scientifically as Carpobrotus edulis, is a robust, ground-covering succulent native to South Africa. It's easily recognized by its thick, fleshy, three-sided leaves and large, bright yellow flowers that can fade to a pale pink.
This plant is a survivor, perfectly adapted to sandy, salty coastal environments. Its fruit is fig-like in shape, with a jelly-like pulp filled with tiny seeds.
